It is simply not the case everyone who doesn't comment thinks you suck. That is not true. Please stop believing that.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not you. Comments are harder to come by than they used to be. People who have tons of comments either wrote the right fic at the right time, have a lot of friends/are fandom-popular, or are good at advertising themselves, or all three.

(Which isn't to say that everyone with an obscene amount of comments is a hack, just that talent isn't the only factor.)

what about people who leave kudos instead of comments

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Kudos are good too of course but like an anon said the other day, she's a fangirl who can't NOT leave a comment because she's full of feels and has stuff to say. People who click the kudos button could just be like "meh, well, it was well written" or they could be thinking "holy shit that was fantastic" and there's no way to know. I wish more people would take the time to leave comments, even if they don't say much.

Aw, OP, I'm sure your stuff doesn't suck. I try to leave comments on all the fics I read, but for some reason, I feel weird leaving a comment on a fic that's years old. I also feel weird when I find an author I like, read all their stuff in a day, and want to comment on every single fic they wrote. I know it's a stupid fear because people generally appreciate comments, but IDK, I feel like I come off as stalker-ish or something.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people think it's cool and flattering when someone comments on all their fics. Anyone who would find it stalker-ish is just a complainer who would complain no matter what you did, tbh.

My god, when people do this with my stuff I figuratively bounce around the room with joy.

Yes, maybe the author won't see your comments, or see them and think it's odd, but for 95% of authors, multiple comments will literally make their day.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Getting comments and kudos to my way old fics is the best thing I know, so please, please bring em!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
OMG YOU'RE NOT A STALKER -- I would LOVE that. Can't think of anyone who wouldn't! (except for the ones who don't reply to comments, maybe? But you can see if that's the case that before leaving yours)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for all the reassurance, you guys! :) I'm gonna go on a comment spree now. Lol

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I am in a smallish fandom. As one of the more popular authors, I probably average 3-5 comments in a chapter (and it's only that high because I get higher numbers on the first and final chapters), and maybe 6-8 on a good oneshot. I had to stop looking at my hit count, because seeing several hundred hits vs. the feedback rate was starting to suck the enjoyment of writing from me. I feel you, and I'm relatively lucky.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, hit counts don't mean anything. That sounds like a good amount for a small fandom and I hope you keep enjoying your writing... don't let the numbers ruin it for you :)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ll never understand why authors view this as a reflection of their skills. Fandom is clearly all about pairings/tropes/kinks/content over skill.

That said, I feel your pain and don’t post my smut anymore for this reason. Or if I do, I totally half ass it rather than taking time to make it fantastic like I used to.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't smut ALWAYS get more comments & kudos though? Even half-assed smut would probably do better than a well-written genfic.

If you can't stop comparing your own work to fics that get dozens of comments per chapter, you may be a little overexposed to the higher ranked side of megafandoms.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-10 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I see where this OP is coming from because I feel like this sometimes. I write of lot of obscure stuff and it feels like throwing stuff into a void when you see hits but no kudos or comments - you wonder if people have just clicked on it by mistake.

The comments in this thread are comforting though <3 and I would say that if you are enjoying writing it, OP, and at least a handful of people are made happy by your fic, it's worth it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I've been in fandom twelve years. I reckon one comment per hundred hits is good going; one kudos in ten hits likewise. If it drops significantly below that I'm pretty much, "OK then" and I'm out of that fandom. Damned if I'm going to spend months researching and writing the best fic I can write for a few "meh, I finished it" kudos.

But I'm a grumpy old woman.

I felt like this secret was a bit whiny after I submitted it... but you guys are awesome at making me feel better about the lack of comments :) Thank you all!!!

In the 'heyday' of LJ, i was writing Buffy and Supernatural fic, and got a *lot* of comments.

Now I post to AO3 and honestly - not a lot of comments. I think that the culture has changed a bit, and newer fans just don't quite see the comment thing as as important as we did back then.

And yeah - it's really not about your skills at all, don't get into that headspace.

You're not alone, nonny. The dropoff over the years has made it really hard for me to justify time spent writing fic when my novel got more reviews on Amazon than the comments on every fic I've written in the last few years.

I have a few fics that have a tonne of comments- but a lot of these are from the same few people! Don't get me wrong- it was amazing and we started talking back and forth. Yep, an entire conversation in a comments section. Would have looked weird for anyone reading. Then two of my commenters started commenting to each other, leading to some confusion from me.
Anyways, what I'm saying, OP, is not to get disheartened. I've noticed that fics with a stack of commenters, like mine, tend to have a small number of commenters who happen to comment a lot. People have entire conversations in comments sections, which is a load of fun when it happens.
I've also written fics in big fandoms with little to no commenters. I just take them as they come.
Commenters/kudos etc have nothing to do with talent and to do with hitting the right fandom at the right time.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
If you're in a smaller fandom, this is just the reality of how it is. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2018-05-11 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't leave comments because i don't want to sign up for a thing.
