Polanski - and IDGAF about what a terrible person he is

Kubrick

Aronofsky

Lanthimos

All four of these guys make films that creep me the fuck out and make me feel like I need to pathologically rewatch them for any details I might have missed the first 50 times.

Fuck you. I'm all for liking art made by terrible people. But support Polanski is specifically supporting famous people escaping justice for being famous and supporting the culture of Hollywood that has allowed people like Polanski and Weinstein to get away with rape.

And you know what, I went anon on that, but nope, I'm going to stand by that opinion.

Right back at ya, Mom.

"I still like his movies despite him being a terrible person", I can see, but "IDGAF about him being a terrible person" seems like a much less defensible stance to me

Re: Who are your favorite movie directors/

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a stance that arises from sheer exhaustion over always being put on the defense when I say I like his films. I have no more fucks to give about what I'm "supporting" or those who would throw fuck yous at me for it. I'm done playing that game.

But saying that you don't give a fuck about him being a terrible human being actively invites people to argue with you about it.

If you said, like, "I know he's a terrible human being, I still like his movies" no one would give a shit. Even if you just said you liked him with no disclaimer at all, you'd be less likely to get shit about it. What you're doing is actively picking a fight about it.

I have mixed feelings about Kubrick. I love some of his movies and hate some others.

For me, Kubrick is a filmmaker whose movies I always respect but almost never actually like. He's so talented and his films are amazingly well-made, it's just that I don't agree with what he's trying to do. I fundamentally dislike the kind of movies that he tried to make. It's the same thing with Terrence Malick.

the only Malick movie I ever saw was Days of Heaven, which I think is possibly the most boring movie I've ever seen. I do not understand why so many people think it's a masterpiece.

Yes, same, and in fact all four of those directors can be hit or miss IMO.

But The Shining is one of my top 5 all-time favorite films, and I'll forever be haunted by Eyes Wide Shut.

I love the Shining, it's one of my favorite horror movies of all time.
Unfortunately I can't stand Eyes Wide Shut. They managed to do the impossible. They made sex boring.

LOL! I can't even remember any of the sex scenes off the top of my head. To me, the film was all about the lead character's egomania, and I love that it leaves so many questions unanswered.

Steve McQueen. I have loved all of his movies so far.

Christopher Nolan has made such gripping movies.

The Coen brothers! I love their quirky and serious movies.

Guillermo del Toro, not even necessarily for the movies themselves so much as how much thought goes into them. If I put on the director’s commentary for one of his films I always end up learning something cool.

GDT just seems like a really cool guy across the board, tbh

AYRT—from what I’ve seen, yeah. I’m not a movie buff or anything, but so many auteur-type directors seem like dickbags. I mean, I’m sure 99% are just making stuff they think is cool or slogging for a paycheck, but then there’s the ones that aren’t so much famous as notorious. Del Toro seems like he’d be fine to teach fifth graders or something, like a monster-obsessed Ms. Frizzle.

Agreed. His staging is always extremely thoughtful and I dig the weird fetuses, asymmetry, rich color, dark fairytales, archways... And I will forever appreciate the way he broke down weeping at Abe Sapien’s ~beauty~ and how he was unworthy to behold such a weird personal vision come to life.

John Carpenter

(big gap)

Jeff Nichols, Alfred Hitchcock, Sam Raimi

Tony Gatlif, Tarsem Singh, John Hughes. Probably some others, but I enjoy these the most.
