I've only just started watching/reading fic (I'm maybe 1/4 of the way through season 3?), but I like the fic that acknowledges that Scott is a fail!Alpha/bad friend, to be honest.

Not a fan of the canon compliant fics that gloss over his stupid choices.

Hear, hear. That's the only 'save' for this fandom for me - that fic writers actually make there be consequences for Scott's shitty behavior, and give the rest of the characters the kind of storylines they deserve.

I stopped watching after season three, but yeah, I agree with you concerning fanfic.

OP here.

I usually prefer AU fics, if I'm being honest, or canon-divergent ones. It's not actually hard to write decent Scott, if you ignore everything after 3A (I really don't read any canon-set fics set after that time). The show writers weren't adept enough to handle the themes they kept bringing up, and they clearly didn't think they needed to provide any context or growth for characters because "it's a werewolf show" which it is, but when you have people writing circles around you online? Come on, have some pride in your craft.

So I don't have much use for the Mary Sue!Scott with super selective morals that the show gave us, but I do think a Scott who actually deals with consequence would be a pretty good Alpha. That being said, a lot (not all) of the super-bashing stuff is so OOC to me. I don't think Stiles would be so loyal to just anyone, so I quite enjoy a competent!Scott.
