What are some things you wish you could get into, but just can't?

Or, what are some things you almost gave up on getting into, but gave a second chance?

Star Wars. The fandom is so huge! But I just can't get into it.

I did not like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones when I first tried them. I am so happy I gave them a second chance.

What are some things you wish you could get into, but just can't?

- MCU, since that seems to mostly be what's big in fandom anymore. I really wish I could get into comics and superheroes, but I can't.

- Sports. Not loving sports makes so many house gatherings awkward, because everyone's watching the game and I'm just sitting there petting their dog.

Or, what are some things you almost gave up on getting into, but gave a second chance?

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. I heard it was progressive despite its name, so I watched the first episode, and it's some girl moving to California for a guy she dated when she was sixteen. I understood it was meant to be satire, but it still seemed... not very progressive to me. But I gave it a second chance, and I'm so glad. Don't let that first episode mislead you - it really is a good show.

I wish I could get into Persona 5, since Persona 3 was one of the first games I ever fully completed & the portable version is one of my favourite games ever, but I just can't do it. It's visually great, don't get me wrong, but the plot, writing & social links (especially) all just seem so dull, childish & trope-y I don't know how to adapt.

I don't understand how someone could love P3 but think P5 was "too tropey."

It's mostly the characters, honestly? Persona 3 characters always came across to me as incredibly well-rounded for a video game? They actually had depth, the writers prioritized them acting realistically over being desperate to maintain their likeability or fanservice/comic relief status.

Whereas P5 characters are basically just your average, run-of-the-mill waifu stereotypes. And/or (for the dudes in the party) they're walking jokes. Every single one of them is flat as hell and I can't find myself genuinely liking any of them.

Like, Ann having this serious storyline about being sexually harassed, but once that's finished? The entire rest of the game has every main male character in the game consistently sexually harass her, only this time it's somehow played for humour, because she's the Sexy Fanservice Character and everyone needs to know it.

I don't know how I came away with the exact opposite impression than you of this game and its characters, but somehow I did. I'm sorry it came across to you that way. :(

Junpei is literally a trope walking. Mitsuru is the quiet, stoic Ice Queen trope. You have the stereotypical tsundere, Akihiko is pretty tyical...

The "too tropey" thing is an excuse tbh.

The plot is also as poorly written & childish as the characters are, so idk! I really don't think so.

Yeah, tropes apply to them, but they still have actual depth alongside those tropes, instead of everything being written like some kind of shitty harem anime. Junpei is comic relief, but in many scenes, like anything with Chidori, he's allowed to be serious. The plot moves forward based on the characters' actions, rather than the characters changing for whatever the plot requires at any given moment.

Like, Makoto has no personality whatsoever other than "token waifu". Ann is (also) nothing but a fanservice character. Yusuke is nothing but a walking joke. One of the links is about banging your homeroom teacher slash prostitute maid, which speaks for itself. The only link I could tolerate in the entire game was that politician guy.

Then there's Akechi. Like, man, I still can't even tell if it was meant to be a twist that he was the bad guy? Not to mention how terribly the whole "deliberately omitting parts of scenes from the audience as an attempt to make the 'this was the plan all along' shocking" thing was executed. Talk about unnecessary.

Yeah, I agree. I like both games but P3 went way harder on the tropes than P5 did.

I'm having trouble with P5, too. I can't put my finger on it... there's just something tonally dissonant I guess. And every time Anne's objectified by another character, or the gay stereotypes show up (I know, it's like only twice) I get thrown out completely. I probably wouldn't if the entire first case wasn't "sexual harassment is bad, mmkay" or if the theme wasn't about not conforming to societies expectations, but. Well. Here we are I suppose.

Those guys are definitely part of the reason I can't get into it, yeah. Persona 2 had a canon gay character in the party, Persona 3 Portable had (arguably?) lesbian social links, Persona 4 had a (potentially?) gay/bi character & did everything they possibly could to avoid confirming his sexuality, and Persona 5 has... two camp gay adult NPCs lusting over teenagers? What a step back.

I almost gave up on the first Phoenix Wright game about a third of the way through because I thought it was "too silly." But I stuck with it and wound up playing a lot more of the games and enjoying them.

Struggling to get through Le Guin's The Dispossessed, largely because I just can't get into Shevek as a character.

That's all Le Guin's work for me. :(

I tried to read this for a school assignment and couldn't get through it either. It was the one time I broke down and relied on Cliff Notes/other people's summaries and reviews to write an essay on a book (my classmates considered this standard practice but I was too much of a goody two-shoes).

I can't Le Guin. I've tried, but I can't.

The thing is, I generally love Le Guin, it's just this one book that bounces me right out.

I had to be talked into watching Rick and Morty and it's my favorite cartoon now.

I wish I loved the DC movies, I really do, but the only one I like is Wonder Woman and the others are just blah. Which makes me sad because I've wanted a JL movie since I was a kid but... I just don't like it. :(

It took me a while to get into The Expanse, my dad was badgering me a little to watch it(or pick up the books) because I think he wanted someone else to chat with about it. Finally started watching it a few months ago and I love it, and I am so gutted that it got dropped. But all that means is that I'm going to read the books now so I can see how it ends(I didn't want to read them as the show was going so I could be more surprised by plot events).

I don't necessarily wish I could get into them, but I can't get into the MCU or Breaking Bad.

Anything by Tolkien. Sorry.
