I despise the term discourse when it comes to fandom wank.Especially when they're one of those 'fandom as activism' shits.

It's fucking wank. Stop trying to make it sound smart or deep or intellectual. Stop trying to act like your brand of shipping wank is more righteous or "woke"(Gods I hate that term) than any other.

I know someone irl who is all about that shit and they infuriate me a lot of the time. They seem to think that a kid making SU fanart deserves 'consequences' for getting the exact shade of Garnet's skin wrong.

That harassment of creators is 'holding them responsible'.

Once they posted some absolutely ridiculous shit on their blog (I quickly unfollowed after that) about how candy corn was homophobic and when I asked them they said they wanted to start 'food discourse'.

and I have no idea how they didn't see that this made them less likely to be taken seriously. But they didn't. The way they talk they think every little idea that comes out of their mouth is just the most brilliant, deep thing.

They drive me nuts tbh and sometimes I find myself concerned that they're going to get some 12 year old fan to kill themselves one day and not feel a damn bit of shame which makes me hate them all the more.

I don't blame you if frankly you don't believe such a person exists, tbh before this I didn't either but... yeah. Just had to get that off my chest.

...candy corn...is homophobic...

But HOW, anon, tell us their reasoning behind this conclusion if you can!

They said they didn't mean it , and it was just to start food discourse.

The post itself gave no actual reasons they threw out something controversial to get people talking.

Lmao damn that's silly!

Agreed. "Discourse" is based on the fallacy that teens or young adults saying the "wrong" thing on the internet are more important than organizational decisions that involved millions of dollars and affected thousands of people.

or writing the wrong thing.

You have young people being called pedophiles nowdays for the high crime of harming fictional characters.

How the hell is candy corn homophobic?

Honestly, I didn't believe people like that really existed for the longest time. I guess I was just really lucky or something, but then I ran across an essay-length post about how SPN shouldn't have paralleled Dean's "I need you" scene with Sam and Gabriel. According to the poster, that moment belonged to Dean and Cas and was an indicator of their true love bond and the SPN writers were doing some kind of homosexual erasure by having Sam tell Gabriel he needed him.

They didn't really give a reason. They just stated something and insisted it was true for the sake of starting an argument. For some reason that annoys me just as much or more as if they had actually come up with a reason.

I actually read genuine food discourse today. I wonder how the interviewee would feel about homophobic candy corn LMAO.

I'd like to think they'd be pissed about people making a mockery of concerns about food to start fake discourse.

Nooooo. Ya think?

This is probably a function of who I follow on social media, but most people that I see use "discourse" are doing it semi-ironically to mean, like, "the things that people are arguing about and taking way too seriously on the Internet lately"

which I think is a useful word for that. and I don't think "wank" really does the job very well outside of specific fandoms.

"the things that people are arguing about and taking way too seriously on the Internet lately"

That's like literally the definition of fandom wank.

I don't think "wank" does the job very well outside of specific fandoms.

It feels very specific to something that's happening in a relatively small, well-defined community. It connotes something that's a personal and emotional disagreement on some level. And it also feels much more specifically argumentative. I think "discourse" is more open-ended and wide-ranging, and less specific. "Wank" requires much more context and specificity.

OK well admittedly my familiarity with the term comes from the old fandom_wank community, which existed to mock exactly what you're talking about.

Gods, this. I saw this one quote on Tumblr that really sums up the whole "discourse" trend: "I saw Goody Proctor with the Devil and she had a bad Steven Universe headcanon!"

And lately, AO3 has been a target of wankery because they allow underage fic and rapefic and bad ships and that means that everyone there is a Literal Pedophile and we must all report the site to the FBI immediately to protect the innocent children, because apparently we're all too young to remember LJ Strikethrough and its aftermath.

It all makes me really wish fandom_wank and its affiliated comms were still around.

Ah yeah I remember that one.

Also the Ao3 wankery just pisses me off so much. Ao3 is amazing and these people need to keep their filthy paws off of it.

This nonsense is reminding me so much of my Baptist upbringing and that makes me hate it all the more.
