[Disney's Sword in the Stone]

Hell, he was especially amazing under the lens of his time period. The fact he considered Wart his son at all when Wart wasn't his by blood. He would normally be a ward or just a servant, and a lot of what he does is as far as the times allow.

? In that time period (Dark Ages for the earliest stories, Middle Ages for Sword) shuffling aristocratic kids around for fosterage was really common. And sure, Wart didn't come with a pedigree, but Merlin the Enchanter was the one who handed him to Ector - the kid was never a nobody. And yes, starting them off as pages, then squires - with a lot of service mixed in with the education - was the norm.

Ector was a decent man, but he wasn't odd for looking after Arthur.

+1, this was totally normal for the time period apart from Wart's parentage being a secret. I agree that Ector was pretty good as a foster dad, though.

In the movie, it's implied that Wart just sort of turned up one day and Sir Ector took him in. Merlin shows up later and Ector has no idea who he is at all.

Huh. Okay then. It's been a loooooong time since I saw the movie.

Is this a repeat? Or just a really similar secret from one a year or so ago? Either way I do agree with it and with the comment above.

Glad that the first comment clarified because I never thought Wart had parents at all???

Yeah Wart's an orphan, and a ward of the guy, but he gets a lot more than normally would have ever been allowed in that society and it's pretty clear he's treated like a son as much as convention would allow him to.

I haven't seen this movie since I was a child, but now I'm thinking about tracking it down again.

I always liked the bit at the end when he bows to Wart and says: "forgive me." And for all the deviations between book and film, they kept Wart's mortification when Ector/Kay bowed. I didn't understand it when I was a kid, but I do now.

Same.
