Bull. He's genuinely good. CGI only gets you so far.

This is honestly a really good discussion I never get tired of hearing, because I see both sides of it.

& honestly, he was great in Black Panther, I forgot he was anything other than "1 out of three people doing MoCap in North America".

I do think mocap should be recognized awards-style, CGI artists have a category too.

Attributing it entirely to CGI artists seems, uh, pretty limited

Iirc it was kind of a big deal when he did the physical aspects of Gollum and I think the fact he seemed to really enjoy everything about that performance shows in how much it still holds up. Of course the computer wizardry is a part of that but Gollum still seems way better than some more recent CG characters that had access to improved technology and I don't think that's 100% down to what we see created by CGI artists on screen.

Even some of his non CGI roles Andy Serkis usually puts in a decent performance, though he's a big fan of eating the scenery for breakfast. Anyway I remember he was one of the highlights of Little Dorrit a few years ago and I loved how much fun he seemed to be having in Black Panther.

I think mocap performances should be recognised but not necessarily in the main acting awards. It's an interesting discussion we could have however about the fact elements of how film is created have changed over the past few years and maybe the awards should reflect that.

They work together.

Just like an actor doing a stunt - there's a lot more to it than just the actor, but the actor should get recognized for the acting part, the stunt team should get recognized for setting it up, the editor should get recognized for cutting it together, etc.

I think he's a good actor for a narrow range of characters, namely the almost grotesquely frightening kind. His Bill Sykes was the stuff of nightmares, just crazy psychotic. The role in Black Panther was mild in comparison. But outside of that range, I don't know.

I think his performance in the Plant of the Apes trilogy (in itself a surprisingly solid series) is really impressive, and the character is far from grotesque.

Is CGI acting all he does these days?

He was himself in Black Panther.
