I think he's a good actor for a narrow range of characters, namely the almost grotesquely frightening kind. His Bill Sykes was the stuff of nightmares, just crazy psychotic. The role in Black Panther was mild in comparison. But outside of that range, I don't know.

I think his performance in the Plant of the Apes trilogy (in itself a surprisingly solid series) is really impressive, and the character is far from grotesque.
