You're not shipping Letitia with people, you're shipping Shuri with them

Shuri isn't a real person. Shuri is a fictional character who only exists insofar as she is depicted in fictional works. Elements of that character resemble an IRL 16 yo (the fact that the character is stated to be 16). Other elements don't (the fact that the character is played by a 25 yo). All of those elements exist together at the same time. Just saying "Shuri is a 16 year old character regardless of how she's depicted" is dumb.

Why not someone from, say Homecoming? Someone her character's age?

I don't know. I don't think that's really a useful question to ask. There's a million reasons why someone might ship one pairing over another.

But, like, I also don't think that there's anything remotely problematic about the ship except that the character is referred to as being 16. It's something that really doesn't come across in the depiction, given the age of the actress and the role that the character plays.

So demanding that some other character is going to be intrinsically superior, just because it doesn't have this one line that has almost no weight in the actual depiction, doesn't seem reasonable to me. Not to say that those are bad ships - but it's unreasonable to assume that everyone is going to like those ships equally. It's kind of a garbage response.

I'm not sure what's garbage about telling people not to ship children with adults but ok.

For me it will never be ok. Despite how 'mature' she is for her age and despite the fact that her character isn't a teen, the character herself is still a child and should be respected as such.

I'm tired of people wanting to ship teens with adults, coming up with excuses as to why it's 'fine because the actor is an adult'. Yes, she is a fictional character but even so she is still a sixteen year old girl!

It’s hot in fiction, it’s super wrong and awful in real life. Why is this so fucking hard for people to get their heads around? No one’s endorsing real sixteen year olds getting porked by people twice their age. It’s fiction. Fantasy is literally harmless.

It's like rape fantasy. Real rape is utterly horrific, but rape fantasy is all about a loss of control even though it's in a consensual environment. Fiction/fantasy =/= real life.

Besides, characters age up. Yet some people forget that, too. Shipping an underage character is terrible and horrible according to those people, even if the fic takes place when they are well into their 20's or 30's. I'm not in the fandom for this secret, but reading the comments, the actress is 25. So the character would look exactly the same if the fic took place when she was.. gasp.. 25.

The way some people react, you'd think she was prepubescent.

Here's the difference between your rape fic scenario and your child abuse scenario. As you say, the rape fantasy is about the loss of control. The writer is generally coming from the perspective of the victim in those fics. The adults pairing 16-yos with middle-aged men are not. The "adults fucking teenagers is hot" fantasy is all about how child abuse makes your panties wet. Getting all pearl-clutchy about how unsupportive people are of your kid raping kink is disingenuous.

Don't bother trying to talk sense into these people, F!S seems to be populated by creepy moms who think it's totally fine to normalize adults fucking children and teens. Trying to argue that maybe shipping teens with adults is creepy just makes you an "anti" or whatever.
