Disturbing/uncanny Trivia Thread

Do you know an unsettling fact? Can be dark or just weird.

You can still get the bubonic plague and, even with modern medicine, you've got a 1 in 10 chance of dying if contracted.

Could be worse. You could be outdoors, get scratched by an animal without noticing during a nap, and then three months later start presenting rabies symptoms not dissimilar from the flu. Chances are by the time they figure it out, it is too late to cure.

Osama bin Laden had Final Fantasy VII on his computer, as well as some anime.

Osama Bin Laden was also surprisingly tall, as NBA player Terry Rozier once pointed out on Twitter:

I know Mad Cow can lay dormant for 50 years. It's why I can't be an organ donor.

I know it’s a bureaucratic thing, but you’d think they’d let you donate to someone old.

Or skin grafts at least? My dad was in the same situation, and they wouldn't even take skin tissue. Surely it's not so communicable skin grafts would pass it on.

Technically, unless you're donating brain tissue or CSF it wouldn't be a problem, but the medical community has decided to be ridiculous about it.

That's what I was thinking. It's completely insane, especially given how few people it surely effects.

Where are you? In Australia, I can't give blood but I can donate organs and platelets.

The US. I've spent enough cumulative time in the UK since I have family there that I'm disqualified from pretty much everything. When my Dad died they wouldn't even take skin.

Huh. I had no clue about organ donation, but as a Brit living in France they won't take my blood for fear of mad cow...

The fact that mammoths were still around when the pyramids were being build always fucks me up.

That is awesome.

That is a very bizarre fact.

That's wild!

I love thinking about what was happening around the world during the same time -- i.e. one area was having a golden age while another place was just beginning to farm etc. It'd be an interesting way to learn history -- not just in some region specific linear way.

And the famous Cleopatra lived much, much, much closer in time to us than she did to the building of the pyramids. The pyramids were built so fucking long ago.

Not much much closer. She lived about 2,000 years ago and the Giza pyramids were about 4,500 years ago, so she was closer to midway between us and the pyramids.
