I remember feeling this way about Mia when I watched The Princess Diaries. Even after her makeover, Mia still wasn't super cute in the books (at least, not until way later), but they thought giving Anne Hathaway glasses and frizzy hair was enough to make her ugly.

Kind of like how they "uglied up" Mandy Moore in A Walk to Remember. They gave her the fugly clothes and bad styling in an effort to make her look plain. She didn't look plain, she looked like a beautiful girl who made unfortunate clothing and hair choices.

Not to mention in the Princess Diaries books it makes sense that she gets teased for her makeover - it is a fairly extreme makeover in the book, with her hair getting cut short and (iirc) dyed blonde. While it’s still fairly petty, it’s a big enough change that I believe high schoolers would give her shit. In the movie she basically just straightened her hair so idk why her classmates care.

Tbh her reveal in the movie WAS very striking because of how unglamorous she was to start with.
