I understand what you mean. I will always feel a little stung that movie Hermione a) didn't keep her hair bushy and b) fixed her buck teeth (I probably would have too, but still). Among her characteristics, the fact that she has bushy hair and was not conventionally attractive made her more relatable (at least to me).

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

TBH, I never saw Hermoine in the books as unattractive. I just saw her as an average girl.

Matthew Lloyd was too attractive to play Neville in the end but who's to say Neville wasn't attractive?

I've said the same thing about Meg here before several times. And the same thing goes for Harriet the Spy!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but can you imagine the casting call for that?

"Ugly girls only"

I mean, I know there are conventional beauty standards but how does someone decide on something vague like "unattractiveness", which is still fairly subjective. I imagine they'd get a lot of flak for deciding what traits are considered ugly or not, particularly when POC are involved (it's hard enough for POC to land modeling gigs because of our very racist beauty standards)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an ugly actor modelling agency, they specialise in 'unconventional' looking people (it's called 'UGLY Models Agency').

Casting breakdowns can be brutal.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you have to specify ugly, just consider a wider range of actors when you audition people. And, you know, not always casting someone who's attractive.

I respect that desire, but it's never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever going to happen.

You should probably either get over it or stop watching adaptations of things with non-pretty characters in them.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I’m in the Les Mis fandom, where a lot of characters are described as unattractive in the book and of course we’re cast as various beautiful people in its many adaptations. The best you can hope for is an attractive actor griming it up.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily, there are tons of shows and movies with ugly people (looking at you, British media).

I remember feeling this way about Mia when I watched The Princess Diaries. Even after her makeover, Mia still wasn't super cute in the books (at least, not until way later), but they thought giving Anne Hathaway glasses and frizzy hair was enough to make her ugly.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of like how they "uglied up" Mandy Moore in A Walk to Remember. They gave her the fugly clothes and bad styling in an effort to make her look plain. She didn't look plain, she looked like a beautiful girl who made unfortunate clothing and hair choices.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention in the Princess Diaries books it makes sense that she gets teased for her makeover - it is a fairly extreme makeover in the book, with her hair getting cut short and (iirc) dyed blonde. While it’s still fairly petty, it’s a big enough change that I believe high schoolers would give her shit. In the movie she basically just straightened her hair so idk why her classmates care.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh her reveal in the movie WAS very striking because of how unglamorous she was to start with.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, same. I will always want characters in adaptations to look like how they were described in books. That being said, though, I don’t get super upset (at least not anymore) if it doesn’t happen. At this point I just hope that whoever gets chosen is talented and that the whole production turns out well.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I know; it's annoying...but unlikely to change. Give US media a miss, really.

British Isles television is much better, because while never ugly, actors and particularly actresses in their media are at least allowed to look normal-ish.

You should focus on shows from the British Isles, or continental Europe, too. Avoid German soap operas, though. They're the worst when it comes to people who look like Barbie and Ken dolls.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I think British television doesn't have quite the same rigid adherence to casting people for looks vs. acting talent. People look more normal... women actually have wrinkles and they're not always a size zero!

Honestly, I don't know how many young kids really are ugly, provided they are relatively healthy, hygienic, and fit. What were they going to do?

I'm sure the actress is going to grow into a very lovely woman and is probably adorable when styled, but to me she looks like a pretty plain girl. Not ugly, but she doesn't strike me as a girl I'd actively call pretty, either, especially with how they styled her. Granted, I wouldn't buy that other kids bullied her because of her looks or anything unless it was motivated by racism or just generic teasing branching off of other things they were making fun of her for. But I thought the movie played it fine, idk.

I didn't think first year Hermoine was that insanely pretty either. They just styled her prettier and prettier as the movies went on.

This is the main reason I have zero interest in seeing this movie. She just isn't Meg to me. Meg is supposed to be gawky and decidedly not pretty and she's just way too cute for me to ever be able to see her as Meg in my mind.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Heather Matarazzo, who is not ugly, managed an actually plain character as a child actress in "Welcome to the Dollhouse". It can be done! "Election" is another movie that had actually plain teen characters (plus Reese Witherspoon, but her character was meant to be attractive in a very particular way).

So yeah, Meg Murray and Hermione Granger were huge disappointments to me on screen. They didn't even bother with Hermione's trademark hair!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
Is there such a thing as an ugly black girl though?
lovelythings: a photo of a red car by a lake and some people having a picnic (Default)

[personal profile] lovelythings 2018-05-22 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
She's definitely precious, but Meg's ugliness was mostly in her own mind. Her family told her so all the time. I'd love to see more plain people in shows, but America doesn't cast normal people.

As for the glasses, sure, they're a device, but they're also an important plot point, so you can't really go without them.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-22 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I find most kids cute even when they aren't at the top of the prettiness spectrum, so I have a hard time imagining how you cast an unattractive kid when most kids are cute. That's like saying they should cast an unattractive puppy. I think it comes down to styling more than casting, really.

I also think a lot of people have an unrealistically low impression of how attractive they were as kids because they remember being awkward or being teased for something or not looking like whichever kid they thought epitomized attractiveness.

Finally, I don't think it's fair to consider what Emma Watson looked like when she was older when arguing she's too pretty to be Hermionie. There was never any guarantee she'd grow up pretty and it's not her fault she did. Back when she was first cast, I'd say she was cute but not excessively beautiful.
