Heather Matarazzo, who is not ugly, managed an actually plain character as a child actress in "Welcome to the Dollhouse". It can be done! "Election" is another movie that had actually plain teen characters (plus Reese Witherspoon, but her character was meant to be attractive in a very particular way).

So yeah, Meg Murray and Hermione Granger were huge disappointments to me on screen. They didn't even bother with Hermione's trademark hair!
