I find most kids cute even when they aren't at the top of the prettiness spectrum, so I have a hard time imagining how you cast an unattractive kid when most kids are cute. That's like saying they should cast an unattractive puppy. I think it comes down to styling more than casting, really.

I also think a lot of people have an unrealistically low impression of how attractive they were as kids because they remember being awkward or being teased for something or not looking like whichever kid they thought epitomized attractiveness.

Finally, I don't think it's fair to consider what Emma Watson looked like when she was older when arguing she's too pretty to be Hermionie. There was never any guarantee she'd grow up pretty and it's not her fault she did. Back when she was first cast, I'd say she was cute but not excessively beautiful.
