Honestly, I don't know how many young kids really are ugly, provided they are relatively healthy, hygienic, and fit. What were they going to do?

I'm sure the actress is going to grow into a very lovely woman and is probably adorable when styled, but to me she looks like a pretty plain girl. Not ugly, but she doesn't strike me as a girl I'd actively call pretty, either, especially with how they styled her. Granted, I wouldn't buy that other kids bullied her because of her looks or anything unless it was motivated by racism or just generic teasing branching off of other things they were making fun of her for. But I thought the movie played it fine, idk.

I didn't think first year Hermoine was that insanely pretty either. They just styled her prettier and prettier as the movies went on.

Even the best looking celebrities just look slightly better than average on their days off, and like you said, I can't think of young people who would fit the word ugly. Maybe awkward, but that's usually because they're styling themselves halfway between teenager and adult.

And I agree that Hermione looks average in the first film, and I think they just lucked into the actress growing up to be prettier. Most of the cast grew up to be quite average looking, and it's not like they kicked anyone off for it.
