Yeah... this is what I'm talking about. I'm the author of the BTS secret from the other day and this is one of my pet peeves - their fans are beyond devoted to the point where it's an obsession (for example, I've seen more than one person bragging about spending money they don't have on BTS merchandise).

If this is what the Hallyu wave is going to look like in America... then no thanks (even if some of my faves would do well here).

In all fairness, if people like OP have that kind of obsessive personality, the fact that they're obsessed with BTS is incidental IMO.

I like the group. I enjoy the music, I buy the CDs, I watch the subbed V-Lives. I don't spend money I don't have on them any more than any other group I'm a fan of (Acid Black Cherry, NEWS, SID, etc), and my life doesn't revolve around them.

What is a Hallyu? Besides something Shangela says.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Hallyu = Korean wave

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So... Korean wave wave?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, even though everyone says Hallyu wave, the wave is redundant.

Like SIN number! PIN number! I giggle every time I hear someone say that.

ATM machine! LCD display!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Chai tea! Mississippi River!

Sahara Desert!

As a super casual K-pop fan, it's always come across as really weird to me just how many people out there seem hellbent on blaming crazy, obsessive (and rude) fans on BTS specifically when there are crazy, obsessive (and rude) fans of every single famous person in existence?

Why only target BTS? As a group, they really don't seem that bad, comparatively?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah this has me raising an eyebrow too. There's tons of groups with 'extra' fans (EXO), why lean on BTS solely? Is it because they're more worldwide than other groups?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Took 5 mins to come back and realise BTS =/= BtVS

confused as hell.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-26 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It does sound like you're in a cult, OP.

If you feel like it's a problem, maybe spend some time away from the fandom. Realize that your fandom isn't life or death. I've been super obsessed with some Kpop groups and BSB so I get it. It feels like everything to you and your group has to win everything, but once you make it your life you alienate yourself from your friends and family and you may just end up hating the fandom but feel like you can't leave and you don't want to end up not enjoying a fandom you're in. Spend some time with friends or family, or even by yourself and just do other hobbies. Once you come back, you may feel out of the loop but you can always being yourself back in.

And FWIW, I think it's amazing that BTS has made it into the mainstream US music biz. I would have loved it so much if my favorite Kpop groups were on a Late Show or a music award show.

For the life of me I do not get all the Korean boy band/K-Pop love.

Well. They're very attractive people who perform mindlessly catchy, enjoyable music. The people who manage them are great at controlling/manufacturing how they appear in the media/the things they say/the way they present themselves/etc. making them look & sound as appealing as possible to their fanbase at all times. It's easy to see why someone would dislike it, but people have always eaten this shit up, so.
