Unfortunately, some fic authors apparently think getting kudos is about the same as if you insulted their mother or something

I don't disbelieve you exactly, but IME all authors have to do is express a polite preference for reviews over kudos and people jump all over them and act like they're puppy killers. So I take comments like yours with a very large grain of salt.

I hate kudos with a passion, but I'm not going to tell that to my readers. I simply turned off notifications so I'm not bothered by them.

I'm exaggerating somewhat, possibly, but people have definitely taken the line that kudos are effectively worthless and that people who leave kudos instead of reviews are actively taking advantage of writers and breaking some kind of fandom social contract.
