Jesus

You think you're pretty savvy about how awful people can be to eachother. You think you have a good handle on human capacity for spite and pure unfiltered hatred.

Then you do something stupid like join Twitter and you realise you were but a child.

All joking aside, with all the shit I'm seeing about totalbiscuit, man... Jesus. I didn't even like the bloke, and I just... It turns out I'm not hardy enough to see this shit without feeling a very deep very real despair. Why are people like this?

Stupid question. I know why people are like this. HOW do these people let themselves get so far down the road of hating your opponents that this seems like something that could ever be ok?

Re: Jesus

Probably part of it is that it's online. Somehow I doubt most of those people- or internet trolls or assholes in general- would be able to go up to a person in real life and say what they say. The distance lets people spew whatever thoughts most people know are wrong to say out loud in relative safety.

Or, the alternative is they ARE the type of people who say those thoughts out loud in real life, and have been ostracized by normal society already, leaving them only internet echo chambers for acceptance. It's a bitter downward spiral.

This is coming from someone who thinks TB did and said some shitty things.

Oh, I'm no stranger to the toxic dis-inhibition effects of anonymous or pseudonymous environments (Straight outta 4chan yo)

Some if this shit is next level, tho. I've never seen it this bad. If I could buy that these people are just trolling and don't really mean it this would stll be the most insane shit I've come across, as it is I kinda suspect they mean what they say. How does toxic disinhibition get to be THIS bad?

Then it's probably Option B) from above.

It's really fucking with my chill.

Re: Jesus

Eh, I'd think you of all people know people exaggerate their anger and outrage online for attention. At this point it's almost a race to see who can say the worst and most shocking things.

Go outside, take a walk, go to the store or something, wander around some normal people and remind yourself most people don't work themselves into violent self-indulgent celebrations over some guy dying of cancer. Even if they think he was an asshole.

That's really good advice dude, thanks.

The same way their opponents think it's okay to use graphic threats of rape and murder as a bludgeon. Both sides of that particular fight have been neck deep in vile, dehumanizing language for ages. The fact that it doesn't stop because someone on one side has died shouldn't really come as a surprise.

Re: Jesus

(Anonymous) 2018-05-27 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's not even really something specific to this fight or this specific context, though

The same stuff is replicated all over

This is probably true.

No. I know this is true. I saw people praising that Playboy model who killed herself and her kid, and laughing about how the farther deserved it. No, People really are fucking terrible. I got a really short memory for this shit, I guess.

Re: Jesus

Yeah, That's fair. Like, I always feel based on my experiences with GG that if anything actually happened to Brianna Wu or Anita Sarkeesian, people would be human beings about it. people would condemn it and NOT gloat. And for the most part I think I'm right, but no, the idea that no-one would be utter scum... I'm kidding myself. People really can be terrible, and with twitter everyone can find the terrible people with some shocking ease.

Twitter experiences massively improve if you're aggressive in controlling what you see, IMO. It's really necessary to use the tools they give you to control your timeline - really don't be afraid to mute people, block people, turn off peoples' retweets. Particularly watch out for people who surface bad content to argue with or refute it - quote-RTing something to mock it still puts the thing on the timeline.

The reality is mostly that... this is who people are, this is what they do - whether it's serious or unserious, it kind of comes down to the same thing. Some people are just fucking wild, or stupid, or have no impulse control, or are flagrant dickheads. The Internet provides a space where it's really easy to express that with relatively little repercussion - in fact, the structure of Twitter means that acting like a dickhead often pays dividends in terms of attention.

The only thing you can really do is reduce the time that you spend looking at and thinking about it. Or you could not use Twitter, I guess, but IMHO the positive of the site make it worth using.

Re: Jesus

I'm really tying not to echo chamber myself. I wouldn't refuse to listen to these people in real life, so no matter how vile I find their opinions I gotta hear them out.
I've been on twitter for about two weeks now, and I've followed a fair number pof diverging people, and I've unfollowed only one person who said that she wants straight white cishet men to unfollowing her. Fair enough. Everyone else I gotta at least give a listen to.

"listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story."
~ Max Ehrmann

The mild depression that comes from listening to these people... Well, I am aware I am doing this to myself.

Re: Jesus

(Anonymous) 2018-05-27 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not even really talking about intellectual point of view, and I wouldn't necessarily encourage echo chambering. I'm thinking of it more in terms of like... signal-to-noise ratio.

Like, for any shade of political opinion, there are people who are somewhat reasonable and smart, and then there are a bunch of fuckers who post intentionally inflammatory shit because they're stupid dickheads. And the intentionally inflammatory shit mostly isn't that interesting - it all kind of works the same. It is stupid and aggravating.

So the goal is to maximize the amount of time you spend looking at good stuff, of whatever political persuasion it may be, and prune the shit off as much as possible.

Re: Jesus

[personal profile] thewakokid 2018-05-27 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense. I just don't like the idea of saying "RIght, you don't get to speak to me any more" or "Right, I'm nor listening to you any more". I feel like I'm losing more out of that deal than they are. Even if they are being dickbags.

The thing that makes twitter so beloved by journalists is that it's a search engine for the kind of canky stupid that ended up in the omsbudsman's slush pile back when real journalism was still a thing. Yeah, it's really easy to find the worst of humanity there.

Re: Jesus

Yeah, I suppose that's a thing to remember. Still it seems like it's a helluva lot of peoples. Some of them quite well known.

Some of them quite well known.

Doing shit like that helps people become well known.
