You make the mistake of assuming that all writers complain about wanting comments. Also, the discussion in the secret appears to be specifically about comments saying "more" or "write a longer story", not just any simple comments like "I liked this."

I don't actually see "more" or "please continue" as inherently bad, though? Like I said, most people honestly think they're complimenting a writer by posting these things. They think that being passionate about your work = thanking you for your work, often because they're not eloquent enough to properly describe how they feel and/or don't see how their comments could be construed as backhanded/rude.

To be clear, I wouldn't defend anyone actively trying to force a writer to cater to their specific demands/desires, which I've definitely seen happen before. I'd never criticize a writer for politely asking readers to comment, either. It's just kind of rough to constantly see people lecturing others on the "right" way to comment.

If no one ever says "hey, when you leave a comment that just says 'MORE' and nothing else, it sometimes feels rude and demanding rather than complimentary," then how are they ever going to realize how their comments are coming across? I would be unhappy if I found out that something I commonly say in my comments was actually rubbing a lot of authors the wrong way, and would want someone to tell me if that was the case so that I could switch up my comments.

Fandom etiquette is difficult to pin down, and the only way to prevent resentment from slowly bubbling over is to try and discuss things honestly. But somehow we can never say "hey, this bugs me" without immediately screaming at each other over which side is more entitled and who has the right to cast the first stone.
