No one in this cast gets anywhere on their own merits, though. At least, not merits as in skills or experience. The only way to get ahead in PotC is explicitly luck and opportunism (and being batshit insane in the right places), and everybody gets ahead usually by being in the right place at the right time and having the right things fall into their lap. See Jack's entire existence, Barbossa only being alive because a pissed-off sea goddess figured he'd be useful, Will's dad happening to be in Davy Jones' crew, etc, etc. About the only ones there who actually try to get by on merit are Norrington, who got shafted for it, and first movie Will Turner, who more or less grew out of it.

I mean, I'm not saying Elizabeth doesn't benefit from silly plot devices, I'm just saying she's hardly alone there. Sao Feng mistaking her for a goddess and giving her a fleet isn't really any worse than Barbossa getting straight up resurrected by an actual goddess because said goddess needs him to go fetch an idiot for her. Or, you know, basically anything that happens to Jack ever.

They're pirates, after all. Merit isn't the point. Grabbing whatever comes in range of you and using it for your own profit and/or amusement is. And Elizabeth, bless her, wasn't behind the fence when that lesson was getting handed out. In that sense, she fits right in.

But part of OP's point is that some fans are acting like Elizabeth is achieving these things on her own merit and not just a quirk of this universe that's shared by all the characters.

I know, but they also said that Elizabeth was more of a Mary Sue than Will in large part because of the Sao Feng incident and becoming Pirate Lord/King on the back of it, and I just wanted to point out that things like that really are par for the course in this universe. Barbossa gets his entire life back because of a cranky goddess, Will becomes a demi-god psychopomp because he managed to get Jack to care about him enough to give up immortality to save him, Jack came back from getting EATEN BY A KRAKEN because, again, cranky goddess, and the fact that his insanity seems to genuinely mould the universe around him.

I do get that the complaint is primarily about the fans, but I still don't really think you can claim that Elizabeth is more of a Mary Sue than, well, anyone else in these movies.
