Everyone always says they dislike male characters for the same reasons, but I've never heard anyone complain about how a male character's skill set or position in life means the whole character is poorly written or overpowered.

There are people in this thread doing it for Will's fighting ability.

There are people in this thread doing it for Will's fighting ability. And when the first movie came out, plenty of people had a laugh at the idea of Orlando Bloom being a blacksmith.

Will's fighting ability is being brought up as a direct response and comparison to Elizabeth's supposed lack of skills, not as a unique argument against his character. And IDK what Orlando Bloom and his skinny non-blacksmithy arms have to do with being a successful pirate.

I don't think anyone ITT dislikes Will as a character because of that, though

DA but I kinda do? Pretty much every character in the series is a ridiculous unrealistic character, but pretty much all the actors pulled it off and made it fun. Bloom's Will was a bland (and often actually actively irritating in a wooden yet somehow also smug way) unrealistic character, which is a fairly grave sin.

+1

Weird how so many comments in this thread seem to assume that everyone loves Will and thinks he's primo pirate material when I don't think anyone's ever even hinted this.

OK, but surely at that point, your problem is with the character being bland, not with the character being unrealistic

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
If he was bland and realistic, I'd be more forgiving.

Really? Why on earth?
