Nuts aren't all the same color of brown.

Also I expected Disney to fuck up the casting and they did, so I'm not angry about Holly.

Them basically ignoring a big part of Butler, however....that's no good.

the butler thing is even more cringey because "big bodyguard guy? yep black. black sounds good"

c'mon...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I googled the girl and she's a kid. Wasn't Holly an adult?

Yeah.

There were also hints of a romance between her and Teen!Artemis later in the series so I see why they did it this way.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Oho, thank you for reminding me - Eoin Colfer did an interview back in 2013 saying he wanted Saoirse Ronan (then 19) to play Holly.

https://www.independent.ie/woman/celeb-news/author-wants-saoirse-to-play-leading-role-as-disney-announces-artemis-fowl-film-29461735.html

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
But the shipping is minimal! There's one "i'll probably fancy her when I hit puberty" line in book 2, and then the time travel book where they're both (convolutedly) the same age. Then Colfer realized he couldn't make it work and sank it to the bottom of the ocean.

The movie could just as well leave the whole thing out.

I guess they were uncomfortable with the romantic aspect as she’s basically in her twenties physically speaking.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Mentally, she is an adult (and since she's been in the police for quite some time, I'd say closer to human!30 than 20). Physically, she's about 80.

Nut brown has an actual definition though

https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/british/nut-brown

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nut-brown

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/nutbrown

I'm not surprised by the decision but saying it's correct would be a stretch

Interesting.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
In regency romances, nut-brown is sometimes used to describe the skin tone of someone who spends a lot of time outdoors (riding, hunting, etc.) as opposed to a lot other people of the upper echelons, who are very pale from staying indoors and being protected from the sun when they are outside.

But, I have no idea how it fits into the context of Artemis Fowl.

Yeah, I used to be called as brown as a nut, back in my outdoors days. I always took it to mean tanned. THese days I'm more pale as an almond.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Words are weird that way, I guess. When I hear someone described as "brown as a nut" I imagine a tanned white person too. But someone having "nut brown skin" I imagine as dark(er) skinned.

That sucks. There are few enough roles for Asian actors.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I'm a little disappointed it wasn't Dave Bautista. (Greek/Filipino, if you're curious.)

He'd have made a great Butler.

Sure, they're erasing his Asian heritage, but they're also erasing his European heritage, so that's alright. nothing wrong with a bit of:

HUWHITE GENOCIDE!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's be honest, whites aren't lacking representation in film. Asian people are.

No one IRL, no matter what their racial or ethnic background, actually looks like anime characters anyway....

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's... not an anime?

As far as I can tell, the sort of people who get most heated over whitewashing in casting really just care about 'brown enough', rather than actual race per se. Witness the almost complete lack of uproar over the definitely back Ricky Whittle being cast as the (explicitly, in text) racially ambiguous Shadow in American Gods.

The movie was never going to make the fairies how I pictured them as a kid. (green-skinned and cartoony. Descriptions came way after I'd already decided how they looked)

the first fairy in Vietnam that Artemis gets the Book from was described as green

iirc because of the alcohol/magic poisoining thing happening to her, but it makes sense that would stick in your mind as a descriptor

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm more pissed about her not being played by a 30-year-old.

C'mon people, that ship was sunk so deep they don't even need to bring it up in the movies.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a movie, there's a boy and a girl...they're going to force some romance back in it, no other way at it. Might not be full blown kiss on the lips, but some slow-mo scenes, some more staring into each other's eyes...(not even not canon, that part)...movie-goers are going to intepret it as romance, and that's how the studios are going to sell it.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
But brown has the connotations of being much browner than that imo.

I do agree about Butler though. A big tough Asian/Eurasian man would be a great, non stereotypical role for an Asian actor. So I guess I am not keen on either casting choice.
