I don't know, I wouldn't say no meaningful responsibilities. She'll be expected to head a few charities and mission-based initiatives or something, and she'll also Not Be Allowed to ever make any mistakes or be anything less than princessy.

Oh no! Charities!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who works for a non-profit charity, I feel like you're implying it's not difficult or something, which is pretty baffling.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course not! But I don't expect that Meghan Markle is going to be coming in and doing the hard work of running the charity, I guess? Maybe I'm wrong about that.

I'm only guessing, not really sure, but I can say that with the fairly sizeable sentiment in the UK that the royals are money-sucking leeches thriving off an antiquated institution, she's definitely got to be doing something akin to serious charity work. Managing PR and navigating constant public lens is probably stressful as fuck even when you're just a celebrity who doesn't owe anyone shit, but the princes and their wives have to give people their money's worth. I think that expectation is probably quite a lot of responsibility, it's not like being some kind of fantasy princess where you just get to dress pretty and drink tea all day.

Don't the royal bring in a lot of tourist revenue? Also, I was under the impression that the queen actually voluntarily pays taxes even though legally she doesn't have to.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Can anyone really unpack how many tourist would not come to Britain if there were no royals? I know people buy a lot of the royal-branded crap, but tourists buy a lot of crap souvenirs in general, because they want souvenirs, so I'm not convinced that if there were no plates with Harry&Megan's faces, there would be a sharp decline in souvenirs sales. People would buy something else.

My official Charles and Camilla shot glass I got in 2005 says "boo" to you.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Do you genuinely believe that the Duchess will be doing what you do, though?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be surprised at a lot of the hands-on work that Royals do. The Queen and princes did military service, Harry famously has been doing active military. They run or at least patron charities, and use their position in public eye to do fundraising or garner publicity for these causes. They can and do officially represent the Queen (the Head of State) around the world, and perform "royal duties". I think there probably is a huge expectation that Meghan and Kate both are active members of the household and being married to a prince is a profession, not a glorified trophy wife.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I would expect that being the patron of a charity, or doing diplomatic tours of the commonwealth, or whatever, doesn't necessarily involve really gritty, nose-to-the-grindstone work. I'm sure that they spend a good proportion of their time doing things that are a public service in some sense, but that doesn't mean that they're working a job the same way that you or I would. Come on now, be real.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but my executive director or board president don't do what I do, either. Their jobs are to schmooze, network, make those valuable connections, oversee general things, and get the money coming in. Their jobs aren't to do my specialized work or to sit there stuffing envelopes, etc.

I'm not really claiming that royals are doing grunt work every day, but it's just not remotely accurate to assume they don't do anything or have no responsibilities.

Or look anything other than super-groomed except in very rare circumstances.

There's also a tradition of Royals working until their 90s and beyond. Can't say I fancy that, myself.

Yeah, props to them for that, can't believe they're going into the monarchism factory every day and working their fingers to the bone like that

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but geez, being queen is legitimately a lot of work and a lot of stress, especially for a 90-year-old woman. What exactly do you think the queen does all day?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-31 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
She Queens... and vacuums...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Do you really think there are only to options, be member of royalty with very little to do as far as work goes, and working in a gritty, physically demanding job in a factory? Because I got some news for you about the job market...

(Anonymous) 2018-05-30 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. Entirely false dichotomy. Very few Brits work in factories these days, most of us work in an office and are not on show 24/7
