Do you donate blood?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
How often? What is your bloodtype? Or do you donate plasma?

I donated blood today. I do it every two months because they come to my work and I can do it on the clock. That were going to a double donation but someone else was using the machine. Maybe next time! But it has been almost eight hours and I am still exhausted. I am O+.

Also, I have wiggly veins and the people never seem to believe me until I get the needle in me and they go, "Oh, you weren't kidding about those veins!" WHY WOULD I JOKE ABOUT THAT?

I'm a nurse who does a lot of blood draws. The answer to that question is: literally 95% of people that come in for draws say that they have wiggly veins and/or needle phobia that's going to make the process more difficult. And about 90% of those are massively over-exaggerating it (their veins are perfectly easy to find and just looking away or being provided the most minor of distractions gets them over the twitchy reaction). So it actually does tend to be a surprise when someone's veins are exceptionally difficult or if they have a genuine anxiety response.

Is there anything I can say so they know I am being serious?

Yeah, ex-phlebotomist here, and most people think they have hard veins. Even if they don't, sometimes you really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to make small talk and keep the atmosphere chatty and relaxed before the patient freaks out, especially if you have to do needle adjustments.

Anyway, if someone DOES have wiggly veins after warning me, I'm probably going to say something like that more as a "pardon me as I fish around in here" than to express genuine shock about the situation.

I get that, but it's still frustrating. I'm one of the extreme cases and I have regular blood draws. I try to warn people that I will likely bleed and bruise a lot and that inserting and withdrawing should be done very slowly to limit tearing. I have my treatment card out that specifies this if they feel the need to check that I'm not full of shit. Nope. They still yank and I end up with gigantic bruises. I know I look 20 but my veins are 90. I won't even let some of them touch me now. The ones who listen are a fucking godsend. I have a bruise this week about the size of a bottle cap and that is a good week for me. My IM injection site has a bruise the size of my fist, and the needle was tiny.

Funnily enough I have no phobia of needles. It's really annoying when I try to give people information and they brush it off as anxiety. I used to have a script that meant I had daily injections at home and I never had a problem doing them. I don't need anyone to tell me to look away, I just need people to acknowledge that they understand what I am saying.

I'm not allowed - my blood pressure is too low and my heart rate too fast. But I used to be a phlebotomist at a plasma donation center, so yay for people who donate. Even though we paid you, I mean, compensated you for your time.

I'm not allowed. :/ I'm an iron-deficient anemic and my doctor has forbidden it.

I do, though I've missed the last few since my health has been up and down. I'm an O-. My first donation was a lot of fun since a huge lump came up on my arm just after, and when I pointed it out to one of the guys he said "Yeah, that happens sometimes, you're not gonna like this but I'm going have to push it back in." :>

I'm the phlebotomist from upthread, and that's just a hematoma. No fun, but basically means the needle wasn't positioned perfectly, so a needle adjustment is all that's needed. I'm guessing it was happening when they were putting fluids back into your body, so provided that the donation was already done, it was really just more important you got your saline or whatever.

Yes.

Usually every two and a half to three months. B+, also my life philosophy. Whole blood.

Yeah, I lived overseas then too. Military base, not the UK, but guess where the meat came from?

I donate plasma every two weeks, and I'm A+. I donated platelets a few times, had a couple of bad reactions, and got banned.

My blood type's A positive and I try to donate whenever the truck comes by the shopping center near my house, though I had a scary experience where I fainted the last time I donated blood.

Gay man in the US who might like having sex with my long-term partner more than once a year, so I'm not allowed.

If you know you're clean of any blood-born pathogens, why not just lie?

To be clear - i think the rules about gay men who actually have a sex life not being allowed to donate are utter bullshite, since a) gimme a break and b) they test for HIV and etc. *anyway*.

The long and short of it is: I feel grotesque doing that. It feels like putting a foot back in the closet, and being complicit in a very real form of discrimination, even if I know I'd be helping people by doing it.

At least my blood type isn't super-rare. I'd be more conflicted about it if it was.

I have tried to several times in the past, but every time I'm too anemic. I'm A-, so I *should* donate, but...they won't take it.

Nope. I can't because of certain meds I take. It makes me sad because I'm O neg, the universal donor blood type.

My iron level is usually too low that they refuse me. I'm not anemic, just borderline I guess.

Twice a month, but Monsieur said to keep all other information private. He doesn't like to share..."donors"...as your questions incidentally sound like his donor application questions...

JK.

Nah. Low iron and bp prohibit me from doing so. EVERYTIME I've tried.

I did for the first time a couple months ago and I'm planning on going again as soon as I can -- I think near the end of June? They make you wait a certain number of days between donations here, idk if it's the same everywhere. I'm B+.

Although it's possible I won't be allowed, since I've changed my asthma medication since then and I don't know if they'll still accept it, and my health has been in freefall for various reasons lately so I'm not sure if it's a good idea anyway. But maybe once I can actually do it I'll be relatively healthy again?

i used to donate plasma for the extra cash, but i wasnt allowed to anymore bc BP too low, Heart rate too high. and now i work with CMR substances so i'm kind of banned for the time being.
