Gay man in the US who might like having sex with my long-term partner more than once a year, so I'm not allowed.

If you know you're clean of any blood-born pathogens, why not just lie?

To be clear - i think the rules about gay men who actually have a sex life not being allowed to donate are utter bullshite, since a) gimme a break and b) they test for HIV and etc. *anyway*.

The long and short of it is: I feel grotesque doing that. It feels like putting a foot back in the closet, and being complicit in a very real form of discrimination, even if I know I'd be helping people by doing it.

At least my blood type isn't super-rare. I'd be more conflicted about it if it was.

Yeah, i totally get that. It sucks.
And the whole 'well, if you've been celibate for 12 months, you can donate' rule is just ridiculous.

I also don't think it's fair to reject something as precious as blood because you've had gay sex within the past year. But not all blood IS tested for HIV, only random batches are tested, iirc. And anal sex just has a greater chance of transmitting the disease.

Sure, some of it is homophobic tradition, but there's a valid enough argument for it. And I wouldn't encourage anyone to lie when donating, it's already a huge problem - especially for donating something like plasma, where people get compensated.

Eh. I don't know that it's valid, *especially* if the donor has been in a monogamous relationship and they've both been tested.

M/F couples have anal sex, too, but they don't screen for that.
