the idea that classical education is about "debate and discussion" is maybe the stupidest, most ill-informed notion in the world, not unlike saying africa is about aids. I do not appreciate having the focus of my entire academic career being related to motherfucking fandom.

Philistines? no. fucking faggots? yes. my education isn't gonna be worth less, but it also doesn't deserve this kind of shit. the idea that fandom is some meta-analogy for everything in the world (life, friendship, family, philosophy, spirituality) is hugely unhealthy and needs to stop.

classical education is defined by genuine curiosity and a core belief in one's own ignorance. even if the idea of it being related to fandom in any way wasn't utterly retarded, both aspects are pretty much the antithesis of fandom.

If the kind of classical education I teach produces worthless little shits like you, I'm gonna quit teaching and just participate in fandom full time. Because seriously? For some background reading on just how problematic your position is, read Jenkins, _Textual Poachers_, pgs. 16-27. Here's a good quotation for you, just in case, like lots of classically educated students, you just don't like to read: "Education can be a force for the democratization of cultural life .... Often, however, education is too preoccupied with protecting its own status to successfully fulfill such a role" (26).
