I'm a little confused.

Wasn't part of the comedy of both of these shows that certain characters were in the wrong? I seem to remember characters in Sledge Hammer that were very much not into the gun thing, it's been a while though. And in Get Smart, it's very obviously part of the narrative that 99 is better and smarter and Max and others are stupid for not seeing it.

I've never seen Sledge Hammer. But with Get Smart, the idea of a woman letting a man take credit because she loves him is problematic even though part of the story was that other people were idiots and not noticing the truth.

I can see it's problematic if she's expected to play dumb BECAUSE she's female, but people do stupid things like this when they like someone. Guys who act tough because 'women like tough guys'. Women who act dumb because 'guys don't like someone smarter than them'.

I like RPGing Get Smart characters on occasion.

You wouldn't believe the amount of flack I get portraying Maxwell Smart accurately. The ironic thing about this is that I'm female, and my boyfriend gets endless praise for being 99 to the nines, so to speak.

You'd think that people could understand that not all fiction has to cater to modern ideas. Can't Get Smart just be a bizarre product of its time? Can't adults believe that there doesn't have to be a PC checklist present for every discussion of past works of fiction?

I'm all for modern media making advances in representation, but making all these ideas retroactive seems censorship prone and ludicrous.
