I hate it when people don't put all tags on the fic from the start.

I start reading a WIP fic for my OTP (none of my hate-pairs are tagged) and a few updates later one of the hate-pairs has been added in the tags. Of course I haven't noticed this in time before reading the new chapter, because I don't constantly recheck the tags.

One more reason not to read WIPs.

I get that, but if the writer's anything like me maybe they don't REALISE that ships gonna be in there until a few chapters in. It took my five chapters of my current WIP to decide on all the side ships.

Exactly. Those who have their entire fics at least in rough draft can put all the relevant tags, but those who write "by the seat of their pants" haven't discovered all the facets of the story, and won't until they complete the work. So they can tag as much as they know, but even the best plotted and outlined stories can take completely unexpected turns.

And I'd hate it if the writer of that fic tagged for my preferred pairing right away when they won't even show up for sixteen chapters if the writer doesn't change the trajectory of the fic between now and then.

There's no pleasing everyone, writers may as well tag whatever way's easiest for them.
