Fandom Pet Peeves

Share yours.

Mine: Why do people make gifsets and set the saturation/contrast to 1000%. Does anyone think this looks good?

Imagines. I wish there was a way to just...completely remove them from all the tags I follow.

I hate when people bookmark my fics without leaving a review. Surely if you liked it enough to read it over and over again, you can tell me what it is about it that you like so much so I can keep doing that thing!

Get over it tbh

I thought this was the place to talk about pet peeves. Is it not generally understood that pet peeves are kind of silly? I was merely responding in the spirit of the thread...

a lot of people have no clue how to write reviews. trying to pinpoint exactly what they liked about something then being eloquent enough to properly explain why they liked it can be really difficult

Honestly, just someone telling me, "I really liked this! Gonna bookmark to read it again and again" would be a nice change of pace from the usual radio silence.

I use my bookmarks as a reading list, not a list of things I want to re-read into eternity. If I like the fic when I've actually read it through, I'll comment on it, but I don't actually have anything to say yet.

AO3 literally has a "mark for later button" specifically for that purpose.

I hate it when people don't put all tags on the fic from the start.

I start reading a WIP fic for my OTP (none of my hate-pairs are tagged) and a few updates later one of the hate-pairs has been added in the tags. Of course I haven't noticed this in time before reading the new chapter, because I don't constantly recheck the tags.

One more reason not to read WIPs.

Re: Fandom Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2018-06-02 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I get that, but if the writer's anything like me maybe they don't REALISE that ships gonna be in there until a few chapters in. It took my five chapters of my current WIP to decide on all the side ships.

And I'd hate it if the writer of that fic tagged for my preferred pairing right away when they won't even show up for sixteen chapters if the writer doesn't change the trajectory of the fic between now and then.

There's no pleasing everyone, writers may as well tag whatever way's easiest for them.

People begging for fic comments.

FFS, just stop posting fic if it's a big deal to you. You're not going to get more comments/readers by whining or guilting people into it.

SA

I should clarify that I'm talking about writers who do this on their tumblrs ad nauseum.

This but also fanartists begging for/trying to guilt trip people into reblogging their art.

Fics that have untagged "surprise!" content that isn't everybody's cup of tea. So stuff like m-preg, trans headcanons, A/B/O or whatever is currently trendy or popular in a certain fandom for whichever reason? That doesn't mean everybody wants to read it and jumps for joy if it's an untagged surprise thing. Especially if it's a longer fic and the reveal happens fairly late in the story. Thanks for wasting my time!

Re: Fandom Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2018-06-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, same. I can kind of forgive this if the story has just updated or whatever, but I came across a fic like your examples that wasn't tagged properly six months later. Never reading that author's work again.

I can't stand fans who make every fandom experience into a debate over how to be as morally pure as possible? Like, you can't like villains, or any heroes that do "bad" things, ever. You can only like characters or shows that are perfect in every possible way.

Also the ones who harass others based on what ships/characters they like/dislike, and misuse social justice terms as an attempt to bully the other person into agreeing with them.

That gifs are the default now and there are fewer people taking really nice screencaps.

People not understanding how Norse surnames work in the Thor fandom. Women don't take their husband's name, they keep their old one. IE Sigyn doesn't become Laufeyson or Odinson when she marries Loki, she stays Iwaldadóttir.

Re: Fandom Pet Peeves

(Anonymous) 2018-06-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on the gifs. If there's not lots of movement going on, it doesn't need to be a gif. We don't need to see the characters' mouths moving to know that they're talking when there are already words on the gif telling us what they're saying!

I've said this here before, but fangirls who are openly rude to the girlfriend or wife of the celebrity they crush on. It's stupid and it isn't going to score you any points with him.

Tinhatting, especially when it's described as a lifestyle or all-consuming hobby.

No, I don't need to know that creator X should die on day Y because of inability to fulfill supposed fandom need Z.

I also don't want trashy blogs stuck in my face for the express purpose of "proving" that being sadistic to anyone in the divine name of fandom is somehow justified.
