Flea medication advice

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-06-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
My partner went to the vets to get flea meds, and was given Bravecto instead of the Advocate that they usually have. 24 hours after putting it on one of them the back of his neck is red raw, completely bald and basically looks like an open wound, and he seems lethargic. Google tells me that Bravecto has a bad reputation in terms of side effects to the point that there's been a petition to take it off the market entirely. :( I should have researched it first but the vet recommended it highly.

I know any medication has a chance of side effects but I'm getting an overwhelming amount of bad reviews here. Has anyone else used this stuff?

Your pet's having a bad reaction to the meds -- bring your pet in for treatment as soon as you can.

:( Thank you. We're taking him in first thing in the morning. I wish there was a way to explain to him that I was just trying to help him. I feel awful.

It's not your fault - that kind of thing just happens sometimes. All the bad hype I've seen about Bravecto has been specifically about the chewable tablets, not the topical stuff. But reactions just happen sometimes, even with medications that never caused an issue in the past.

That's good to know. Thanks. :) He just keeps looking at me with those eyes like "WHY DID YOU DO THIS." I thought he seemed way sulkier afterwards than he normally is. But he's currently wedged between me and my partner and getting maximum cuddles, so he's at least comfortable for now.

I’ve used it twice on my cat and it seems to work well without side effects; I like that it’s supposed to work for three months. On the other hand, I accidentally got some on some cherries I was eating just now and didn’t realize it until I’d swallowed one. It tastes like they put capsaicin in it to keep pets from licking it; I just assumed the ground dried chipotle I buy all the time had gotten on the bag of cherries until I saw the cat rub her head, complete with freshly applied bravecto, all over the bag—she loves to stick her face in plastic bags, which is gonna get her in trouble some day.

To be fair he does seem way more comfortable in terms of fleas/itching. Eek, that must have been a weird taste experience! Your cat sounds like one my partner's mother has. I went over for Christmas and he was literally just smushing his face onto every available surface. Like "this is mine, and this, and this."

Yeah my poor cat has a flea allergy and Advantage and Frontline just weren’t working anymore, so I’m glad something does. And I had heard iffy stuff about the chewable versions of bravecto/fluralaner, too. I’m sorry your poor fuzzball had a bad reaction; hopefully the vet can help tomorrow!

It wasn't that brand but I used a topical on our dog from puppyhood and he never had any problems with it. Then suddenly one day when he was 3 his skin was red and flaking after an application. The vet said that sometimes dogs suddenly have a reaction to it and it isn't necessarily a change in their body (though it can be), it could be that minor reactions weren't noticeable and had begun a few applications before. She gave us the option of switching topical brands or switching to chewables and we opted for the chewable. Milo has been taking the chewables for about a year now and he loves them. They've also been more effective because a lot of the topical stuff would diffuse into his coat even though he has short hair, so he never got full impact from it.

Hoping your pet feels better soon! And I promise he still loves you <3
