What have been some of your worst car experiences?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-03 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Either scary or frustrating. Driving or passenger.

That fucking asshole on the highway who speeds up until he is side-by-side with you, BUT REFUSES TO FUCKING PASS ANY FURTHER. Or else he gets a bit further then slows down for no reason, but doesn't quite let you go ahead so one of you is still stuck a blind spot. Oh, but if you speed up to get away, HE SPEEDS UP TOO AND BEGINS THE PROCESS ANEW. And the same if you dare slow down so that he can get ahead. He slows down until he's glued to your side again. FUCK ANYBODY WHO FUCKING DOES THIS, I HOPE YOU PISS OFF THE WRONG PERSON ONE DAY AND GET RUN OFF THE FUCKING ROAD.

*hyperventilating*

...I'm coo' now.

When I was in my late teens, my family was planning to move from Iowa to Vermont, 'cause my dad had a job offer out there. We were riding in an old two-door car, crammed in with whatever smaller stuff we could take with us (didn't have the money for a U-haul at the time, had planned to come back at a later date to grab the rest of our stuff), so that was tough enough.

When we were in Ohio, apparently our car decided to give out on us and the engine started smoking and eventually there were some flames coming up from the front of the car. The upside is that we just so happened to break down right along a busy road in a town, and some other motorists/passerby apparently saw the smoke coming from our car and called the fire department, who, also luckily, happened to be right down the street. So thankfully they were able to put out the flames before things got any worse, and our stuff inside the car wasn't affected.

Still, it was a pretty scary experience, and it left us without any transportation, so we had to find a way to sort all of that out going forward.. And watching the firefighters try to help us get all the stuff we'd crammed into our car out of there, like it was a clown car or something, was kind of hilarious and embarrassing all at the same time, too.

*The issue with the car was probably a sign the move wasn't meant to be, too, 'cause that Vermont job offer fell through not long after.

My family's always had issues with our cars, though-we've had a lot of older, used ones, and they've always had some kind of trouble. Windows that won't properly roll up or down, having to park it a certain way 'cause it risks rolling if we park it any other, paint chips falling off the car, stuff like that. Our experience with cars is why the only thing I care about in relation to them is, "Does it actually run okay and can it get me safely from point A to point B? Yes? Then we're good." :p.

We were in a taxi jeep in Vietnam and one of the tires blew. It was BFE Vietnam, with only some lean-tos and shacks around, so... we were commandeered by the driver to come help him steal a tire from another jeep that we'd passed a ways back. We succeeded admirably, though the stolen tire was smaller than the other three so our taxi jeep had to finish its journey lopsided.

Looking back it's really not a bad car experience, but I was the goodiest-two-shoes twelve-year-old and barely holding back a meltdown about committing theft in another country. XD

Everything involving my sister behind the wheel. I love her with all my heart, but jesus. One time she wasn't watching the road for a second and let the wheels almost go off an inclined country road, then rebounded so hard when she realized what was happening that we went into an action scene tailspin and were lucky there was no traffic. And she just constantly needs help getting anywhere. She once accidentally drove us into the city of Chicago during rush hour when we weren't supposed to be going beyond a suburb. She's one of those people who has to make a trip about fifty times before she can do it without directions.

Driving on ice was horrifying. D:::

Also, I was driving on a rural highway and some farmers were burning their fields. So I had to drive through three minutes of thick black smoke.

One night I was cycling home and going along this stretch of road where it's impossible to overtake cos of trees down the centre of the road. And some car behind me came really close to my back wheel and started revving its engine to get me to speed up. I was terrified they were gonna run me over :(

I was driving on the highway and there was a fairly slow person in front so I switched lanes.
On that part of the road, it's basically a very long stretched curve so it's entirely possible to see people coming up from behind if the go at a reasonable speed and there was nobody there. However, once I had switched lanes, some idiot came rushing up from behind (roughly between 110-120 mph) so there was no way I could have seen him. This was also massively about the speed limit of ~75mph (I was above the speed limit as well, but not by that much). I didn't get directly in front of him but he had to slow down a bit - it wasn't like he had to hit the brakes all of a sudden.

So I drove past the slower car on the other lane and immediately switched back because the guy was already flashing his lights at me. I assumed he would just speed up again, but what happened instead was: He switched lanes to get in front of me and slammed on the brakes. It was basically him going "Fuck you, I had to slow down a bit so I'll make you slow down as well." He did this with barely any space between our cars.

I'm very sad that there wasn't another person with me in the car because otherwise, I would have seriously considered trying to sue this fucker for endangering me, the person behind me (and also himself, that idiot).

As a child, I was in the back seat when my mom got v e r y s l o w l y sideswiped by another driver, a woman who was clearly still learning to drive and didn't speak English. She was trying to make a turn, hit us while we were stopped, waiting to make our own turn, and then rather than stop or back up, she KEPT GOING, slowly scraping the two cars together, until her turn was completed, then stopped. Our car used to make a chiming noise if you opened the driver's door while the key was still in the ignition, and it made that noise all the way home. After getting fixed, the car never made that noise again. Back then, instead of a chime or beep some cars would have a recording saying "THE KEY IS IN THE IGNITION" so maybe it's good we didn't have to listen to that over and over all the way home?

I had a fan belt break on a highway in rural Iowa. I was stuck on the side of a road with little traffic, miles from a town, and this was back before I had a cell phone. Fortunately, a retired couple stopped, let me use their phone to call for a tow and call my parents, then took me to their place and made me a sandwich while we waited for my dad to drive the 3 hours down to pick me up. The garage was already closed for the day, so we had to drive all the way back down the next morning to see about getting my car fixed.

I once was approaching a red light and wanted to get in the turn lane. It was icy and when I breaked I spun a complete 360 degrees... and wound up exactly in the turn lane and pointed the right direction, without having hit anything or sliding out into the intersection. Despite the good outcome, my legs were so shakey I had a hard time pushing the clutch the rest of the way home.

I have both rear-ended and been rear-ended by someone (not the same person!) but in both cases there was no damage so we just said never mind and moved on.

Nearly getting hit by a double decker bus when the sister of a friend was driving.

She was in a mood that day and she should have waited for the bus to go first, didn't, pulled out ahead of the vehicle significantly larger than us and told us to shut up when we all screamed in fear because we nearly got hit by a fucking bus.

None of us went in a car with her again after that.

First car was a used car and I planned to change the tires right away because the tread sucked. Unfortunately first snow came early and I was driving to work down a steep hill and my car... did not stop.

I didn't have enough grip to turn onto the road I needed at the bottom and ended up hopping a curb and bumped up against a guardrail.

I am lucky as fuck the guardrail was there, because there's a ravine on the other side.

A pretty minor one, but my partner was at a red light driving me to the train station when we were going away for the week (I was getting the train with my dad while my partner was going to pick everyone else up after) and a van went into the back of us.

It was pretty minor damage (we panicked because undriveable car = no holiday) but the impact of it felt huge and scary. Also we live in such a small town that we knew the driver which made it less awkward. My heart still stopped though.

I was in a car accident in my 20s when my car was hit by a monster truck (on a public highway!) and completely smashed up. Luckily neither me nor the other person in my car was hurt. The driver of the monster truck flipped us the bird even though it was her fault and then kept driving. According to the police report she stopped the truck further down the road and hid in the bushes and when the cops found her she lied to them, saying the guy in the car with me had assaulted her. She also lied at the suit hearing and said I had been driving w/o my headlights. I won the suit but she skipped town instead of paying for the damage to my car.

Bus driver that kept running red lights. I was scared to stand up until he had actually stopped and spent the whole time holding the bars in front of me.

I mean on plus side. Shortest bus trip ever. I didn’t think we could make that trip that fast.

Pits and below the knees, and only as needed. Am I wearing a sleeveless shirt? Pits! Do I want to wear a short skirt but don't want to wear tights? Legs! April-ish is always a fun time of the year when I get rid of my winter pelt and am reminded of how blindingly pale my legs are.

I guess bikini area too, but only if I'm wearing bikini bottoms. I have a cute suit with boy shorts, so it's not always the case.

Ankle to knee, 'cause the hair on my calves/shins is *really* dark and also weirdly patch, so - no hair on the sides of my calves, a bit on the backs, patches on my shins. Looks mangy, so i shave it. And, sadly - Hobbit toes, so i shave them.

Keep the bikini area shaved up/crew cut, 'cause it's just more comfortable for me.

Don't shave anything else.

Flea medication advice

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2018-06-04 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
My partner went to the vets to get flea meds, and was given Bravecto instead of the Advocate that they usually have. 24 hours after putting it on one of them the back of his neck is red raw, completely bald and basically looks like an open wound, and he seems lethargic. Google tells me that Bravecto has a bad reputation in terms of side effects to the point that there's been a petition to take it off the market entirely. :( I should have researched it first but the vet recommended it highly.

I know any medication has a chance of side effects but I'm getting an overwhelming amount of bad reviews here. Has anyone else used this stuff?

I know this is late but I'm worried/upset & don't know who else to ask...

(Anonymous) 2018-06-04 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Like the title says, I'm not sure how many people will see this, but I'm freaking out and can't sleep and feel like I don't have anyone I can talk to about it.

Long story short, my sister's BF saw my boyfriend holding hands with his best friend and is convinced there's something going on. I asked BF, he didn't deny it, said "yeah, he's my best friend, what's the big deal?" like it's totally common/not at all unusual. Obviously I know there are cultures where male friends do things like that, but ours isn't one of them. Our friend group is constantly joking about them liking each other and they themselves have made jokes about how they're in love with each other.

He's kind of acting like I'm making a huge deal out of nothing, but he's in a relationship. If he were holding hands with a female friend in public no one would think it's acceptable so why is it okay if he does it with a guy?

I'm just not sure where to go from here. He says "I'm not cheating on you, I really don't know what else to say" but I'm not entirely sure I believe him. I don't think I should be in a relationship with someone I can't trust, but I also feel like breaking up with him over this would be overreacting.

Thoughts?

da
