I don't see a problem with this. Editing can be just as satisfying as writing. And it's not like you're sending it to the author or claiming it as your own work.

I do the same. And I delete annoying SJ speeches or consent conversations, replace interchangeable side characters with ones that I like, and occasionally rewrite endings.

I do this too and I've always felt a little bad about it, but it's really enjoyable for some reason.

Me too! When I find good fic that works for my OCs or other favourite characters, I Find and Replace the names and snip out anything wrong (like eye-colour, accent, geographical location) so I can enjoy the story again but with my chosen characters.

Hm.

I save a fair amount and sometimes edit for spelling and grammar, but if I thought about actually rewriting a whole scene, I probably wouldn't save it. Though my fandoms usually have quite high fic production, which means if I really don't like something particular about a fic, there are thousands of others to read. I totally understand some homonym confusion, the occasional missing word or comma, or a strange word choice or two, but when there are so many issues that it's obvious the author can't be bothered to use spellcheck or even reread something before they post it, I will stop reading it, even if it has an interesting premise.

I hear you, OP. I used to do mini remixes (y'all remember that?) for fic I enjoyed but would enjoy more if it was catered to me completely. these fics never saw the light of day, of course.

Isn't it ironic that you think your writing is better than theirs when you have an error in your secret?

(authors, not author's)

Presumably the fics they're editing have more numerous and egregious errors.

I have had that impulse, but I'm just too lazy.
And yeah - you're not posting it or sending it to the author, so - no big.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-05 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me, OP? I have done the same. A LOT.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-05 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
From the fic writer's perspective I don't mind this at all? Like I'd be glad if anyone bothered to read my fics and thought it was worth editing/interacting with.

i mean i've literally seen this as a challenge in fanfiction except those people were publicly posting their versions of other people's stories so i think you're fine
