What is this? Please explain.

Hollywood has a history of when making girl versions of monsters, they just make it a light color and 'prettier'. See girl!Stitch from the Lilo and Stitch show.

So, it looks like Dreamworks is going the same route with girl Night Fury (white, sparkly, and blue eyed). People are coming up with all kinds of crazy reasons as to why she is that color other than the creators were going wtih the stereotypical girl look.

Also, white, sparkly dragon would make bank in merch sales.

Why would people need to justify anything?

DA

Hmm, well, so far canonically no other dragon species has had these huge species dimorphism. The males and females looked exactly the same and were pretty colors that didn't depend on sex. (Stormfly being blue for instance.) So, unless this White Fury is a subspecies of the Night Fury, this is completely out of character for all the other dragons we've seen. To me, it's a baffling design choice.

Fans of the series are upset about the design. Really upset, like majorly pissed upset. They're expressing their upset, people who may like the design feel attacked and need/want to defend the way they like it.

If Dreamworks were truly worried about not being able to tell her apart from Toothless, they could have made her bigger, made her another shade of black (Toothless is pretty flat grey black), they could have given her an 'oily sheen' of greens, blues, pinks and purples. But, she's white and sparkly and that just ticks all the stereotypical "Female character" check boxes that are so common in media. She also has less head things, the way she stands she looks like she has "breasts" and her claws are smaller. She has "eyeshadow" for goodness sake.

Hell, they could have called her an albino, kept the scaly appearance and made her pink like a Hippo or a Dolphin but they went white, sparkly and smooth.

We simply don't have enough information. And defenders of Dreamworks are trying to justify it because it's Dreamworks, not Disney, and we should TRUST Dreamworks not to pander to this gender stuff. So they're saying there has to be a reason. Some have gone as far to say executive meddling. People simply want to have faith that the creative team behind HTTYD that has managed SO FAR to be really progressive, wouldn't take this HUGE step back in terms of gendered animations of people and animals.

I don't know why anyone expects DW to be progressive in this matter. It's a silly gendered trope, but it's not exactly offensive. There's no reason to expect a kids movie like HTTYD to break every mold instead of following the trope. It's not that deep.

is there any info available about the new dragon? if it's revealed that it came from a snowy/cold region, then that would at least justify the coloration.

I mean, the entire point of a Night Fury is that they... Don't stand out against the night sky, so her being white is a huge flaw in that. How does she hunt?

Wait what? I'm out of the loop. Don't tell me they created a dragon Mary Sue to pair up with Toothless?

I'm so tired of this sexist garbage. Whatever this new dragon is, it's no more a 'Mary Sue' than the original Toothless.
