Money actually can buy happiness for most people with depression, because the leading cause of depression is poverty.

nayrt, but I mean as a person who has struggled with both poverty and depression, that's a really, really nasty way to respond to someone whose depression literally killed them, just because they happened to be wealthy

Also NAYRT, and I don't think that's how they meant it. I read it as a general commentary on the fact that commentary can lead to depression; also, people without money don't have access to treatment.

However, this particular context probably wasn't the best place to bring that up. Even though she had more resources than some people, clearly she was still struggling, and it's awful.

Isn't it actually the case that serious depression is more likely to affect people who are middle class to wealthy? Because people with more actual tangible struggles are more likely to learn how to directly cope with disappointment?

I’m not any of the anons in this thread but I’d like a source for this since most of my working (poor) class family died of their “coping” mechanisms.

This seems to indicate that there's no clear correlation between depression and SES, except for if there is a dependence on financial aid, which does seem to be a factor. But risk factors that also seem to matter are gender (women almost twice as likely), family history of depression, negative life events (especially unexpected loss of a spouse or intimate other), and psychological demand at work.

I think it’s more that when you are wealthy to middle class people actually take your depression seriously as a mental illness. When you are poor people expect you to be sad, cause your life sucks. The stigma of depression being a rich person disease and poor people being more resilient helps no one.
