The actress is twenty four.

Why the hell would people not read her as being that age?

I just watched the movie recently and even going in knowing the actress was not a teen, she still came across as a teen to me, tbh. Maybe because I'm 35 and her personality (the character) screamed headstrong bratty teenager to me?

I mean, don't get me wrong, I loved her character, she was awesome, but she totally read as a teen for me, even KNOWING she wasn't.

+1

That's how she came across to me, too.

Lots of reasons.

Because people don't necessarily know actors' ages.
Because a character's age doesn't necessarily correlate with the actor's age (seriously, an audition for a character in their early thirties might have a call for anyone from 25-40)
Because teen characters are often played by actors that are in their twenties (In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter's crush and homecoming dance date, Liz, is played by an actor who was 27 when the film came out)

Seriously though lmao. This 1000 times. Why the fuck do so many people bring up that whole argument when it comes to this character specifically?!

“Oh but she says stuff college students would say!!!”

And that stuff is also things teenagers in this day and age would say, wtf is your point? Teenagers and young college students can have overlapping interests. It doesn’t mean that Shuri wasn’t obviously meant to be portrayed as the super genius teenage sibling to the Hero.

That's exactly the point. Since there's an overlap, there's nothing wrong or strange with seeing her as college-aged either.

I don't know her actress or her characters age before watching BP, but I would have guessed her age was early 20's. Certainly not 16.

DA

Because we're too used to seeing 30-year-olds playing high school students. It makes it too hard to guess what age the character is supposed to be based on the actor's actual age or apparent age. One of the "high school students" in the student orchestra on Teen Wolf looked like a 45-year-old.
