Honestly? I think it's because the Bucky/Shuri scene at the end of Black Panther read as romantic to a lot of people, and those that ship Bucky with other characters are REALLY mad about it.

This sort of thing is never about morality, it's about the likelihood of what will or won't become canon.

I was a fan of Merlin and the MOMENT Guinevere was upgraded to Arthur's love interest, there was no end to the hand-wringing from Arthur/Merlin shippers about how her character was being reduced and how un-feminist it all was. Soon enough they dropped the pretence and just settled into racism/misogyny - and I guarantee the same thing will happen to Shuri in time.

Not in the fandom per se, so I'm genuinely confused - why were they surprised that a character called Guinevere was the end game romance? (Also, she was lovely, smart, and brave, and made for an awesome queen.)

I don't think anyone was surprised, per se. It was more that the TV show had taken so many liberties with Arthurian mythology already, so there was the possibility in some fans' minds that Arthur/Guinevere might not be the end game romance. With a further division among that group of fans between the ones who didn't necessarily expect the pairing but liked it in canon, and the ones who didn't necessarily expect the pairing and disliked it in canon.

LOL, wow!

Like... she's Guinevere? What the hell did they think was going to happen? I watched the show much later, years after it aired, so I missed the fandom bullshit, but Guinever was such a pleasant surprise!

The original Guinivere is as frustrating and un-feminist as a character gets in just about every incarnation of the myth, so they can just shut up about Merlin!Guinevere, who was strong and beautiful and lovable in ways no other Guinevere was.

And I say this as someone who got out of that show shipping Arthur/Merlin like there is no tomorrow. Also, because people are capable of more than a single thought and opinion at a time, my next favourite ship was still Arthur/Guinevere, or an OT3 with all three of them.
