Not long ago I was chewed out thoroughly for mentioning Santa Claus and Jesus in the same sentence. I'm still all weirded out by it, because I really don't see much of a difference.

Are you sure you weren't being condescending about it?

I'm an atheist too, but if you really don't see the difference between Jesus and Santa then I think you may have been (however accidentally) condescending like the anon above me said. One of them is a religious figure with lots of historical and theological relevance and great importance in people's lives, the other is comparatively recent and was latterly designed by Coca Cola. If you don't believe in either of them that's fine, but they are still different and have different meanings to people.

"Saint Nicholas, also called Nikolaos of Myra or Nicholas of Bari, was Bishop of Myra, in Asia Minor, and is a historic Christian saint. Because of the many miracles attributed to his intercession, he is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker. Wikipedia
Born: March 15, 270 AD, Patara, Lycia
Died: December 6, 343 AD, Myra"

"His reputation evolved among the faithful, as was common for early Christian saints,[7] and his legendary habit of secret gift-giving gave rise to the traditional model of Santa Claus ("Saint Nick") through Sinterklaas."
