this should be fun

I've stopped pretending to not be weirded out. I am deeply weirded out by people like this.

But what can you do? Faithers gonna faith.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-09 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with the context at all - what's going on that's weird?

And yet if I was caught on camera putting up a massive Star of David, the non anti-semites would congratulate me on being "fierce" and "brave" for my pride in my religion.

A giant cross isn't going to hurt anyone. I mean, unless it falls down onto them.

For me it's because of historical precedent of Christians persecuting my religion and my own personal experience with it.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-09 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing that bothers me is how tacky it looks. It's just really thin pieces of metal. As a celebrity, maybe they could've done a better job and get a proper stone statue, or heck even a highly ornate mausoleum that makes people's faces melt off from sheer beauty (seriously, ecclesiastical art can be beautiful). This is just in bad taste design wise. The skyline would've been better without a reminder of laziness in it.

Not long ago I was chewed out thoroughly for mentioning Santa Claus and Jesus in the same sentence. I'm still all weirded out by it, because I really don't see much of a difference.

Since it's getting close to that time of year in Sweden, I momentarily thought he was putting up an deflowered maypole, a fertility symbol meant to symbolize a dick, and I was like yeah, I can see why this would be weird to other cultures, but no need to judge... I guess I don't see big crosses enough here.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-09 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like Christianity, either.

That said, I don't like any of the Abrahamic religions, and I think it's bizarre that Christianity is the only one it's acceptable to vocally dislike.

I find pretty much all big, public displays of 'religion' and 'faith' to be tacky as hell and yes, fucking weird. Seems like, for a lot of people, stuff like this is a way to pretend to be religious without having to do anything hard, like ...help people.

The uber-religious of *any* sect or belief system weird me out.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Why plant trees when you can plant crosses instead.

It weirds me out, too, op. I'm not comfortable with big displays of religious faith like this because IME, people who do that tend to be less understanding about non-believers like myself. Or they view my lack of religion as a reason to try and convert or preach to me, which I don't appreciate.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of arrogant, condescending atheists here, including OP. I find it ironic when atheists are judgmental and trying to tell others what they should or shouldn't do. You guys aren't even noticing that you are just as irritating as the religious folk who want control other's behaviours!

Jees, so Chris Pratt put up a cross. Who the hell cares? Is he hurting anyone? No, so why can't you just leave him be?

(I'm saying this from the pov of someone who can take or leave Chris Pratt).

If this was all he was doing, yes, missing the point and irritating. But as long as he's doing actual public service things as well, I don't have a problem with public displays of religion. It is hypocrisy that I hate.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
There was a family in my old neighborhood that used to put up a giant light-up lawn menorah every year. To my shiksa mind, it was kind of cool/weird, but I got the impression that their direct neighbors (also Jewish) found it tacky as all get out. In the grand scheme of things, a giant lawn menorah, a Mary statue in half a bathtub, a big ole cross out on the back forty of your farm, or bunch of lawn flamingos facing Mecca don't hurt anyone. Honestly, we'd all be better off if we focused more on how people act in public and less on what they do in their backyards.

i'm with you on this one, op. ime most of the evangelical types who are into those kinds of advertising-for-jesus things have drunk the kool-aid when it comes to ~~~conservative family values~~~. if pratt comes out with some shitty words to say about the LGBTQ community or gender roles or etc. i will not be at all surprised.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Coming in late but I have to comment:

Maybe Chris Pratt is putting up that cross to remind HIMSELF to act like a Christian. Considering, you know, HOLLYWOOD, I think that's reasonable. It's hard to keep to a faith when everyone around you doesn't.

It's okay for Christians to take the time and/or money to support themselves and other Christians.
