Writing is hard. People tell you this because they're struggling to write their own shit out of necessity/desperation and don't want to hear your complaints. No one is going to write you what you want for free. If they wanted to write it, they would already be writing it.

I'm not saying stop complaining. You can complain all you want. But you're going to keep getting the same response for a reason, so you're really just frustrating yourself and everyone else.

We KNOW writing is hard, that's why we're sad in the first place!

The frustrating thing for me is that there are better answers than "write it yourself", like "Why not try your luck with communities or authors who take prompts?" or "Have you thought about commissioning fic?"

Or, you know, when you have nothing nice or useful to say, just say nothing.

Complaining about a lack of preferred fic is not nice or useful. It's just annoying.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And I guess you simply can't resist adding to the uselessness and annoyance with a rote answer that doesn't really add anything.

Nobody is forcing you to read any complaints or rants. If they bother you so much scroll on, unfollow, block...

+1 I don't believe for one second that ayrt has never complained about anything and I can't stand this kind of hypocrisy.

It's an expression of need; there's an emotional lack being felt and shared. While it may not be an objectively significant measure of distress, those of us who wish for fic that we can't find are sharing how we feel and looking for some sympathy. (And fic, if you happen to have it, or know of a community or author open to commissions/prompts.)

I'm kind of sad that you're looking at people expressing unhappiness and responding with "It's just annoying." It looks like a staggering lack of compassion from here. :(

Unfortunately, as for Mx. Annoying up there...assholes gonna asshole. Can't generate empathy in others. See also: US election results 2016, and the hellscape that resulted from it.

Agreed. It's sad people do this. They're not forced to read these stories about wanting a specific kind of of fic, but instead of scrolling down and reading something else, they decide that they're justified in telling people to stop talking about the the subject. The anon here is trying to disguise it as a reasonable argument based on logic, but it's not. It's just, "Waahhhhhhhh, shut up because I don't like this".

This is part of why I'm sad about the decline of kink memes. People would put all kinds of prompts (including gen prompts) on them and it often got me writing stories about characters I otherwise wouldn't think to write about.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I found all sorts of great stuff through kink memes back in the day. I don't think I ever wrote for them (I only write gen, and finding a gen prompt that grabbed me was super rare), but I loved leaving feedback on the stuff I enjoyed.

Commissioning fic is an excellent idea - fanficcers raise good money for charity this way. It's a bit of a gamble, of course - you might get nothing. But worth a try, since the money's going to a good cause anyway.

Writing is hard? Sometime tell all those highly energetic fans who spew 300 word fics all over ffnet, because they don't seem to find it hard.

What's the point of saying something like this in the context of this conversation

what are you driving towards
