This so much! I love reading long plotty fics, I love reading my favourite rarepairs getting it on - but all I write are short missing scenes, and I can't write sex scenes at all.

I've had to write the fic I want more than once and I don't get nearly as much out of it as when I read someone else's fic. I like contributing but find it bizarre that so many people can't see the difference between reading your own fic and reading one you don't know exactly what is going to be said or happen, often word for word.

I like to read fic that’s actually happy, and that’s something I don’t know much about how to write. Back when I wrote, my writing depressed me and depressed my readers.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
by happy do you mean fluff?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Writing is hard. People tell you this because they're struggling to write their own shit out of necessity/desperation and don't want to hear your complaints. No one is going to write you what you want for free. If they wanted to write it, they would already be writing it.

I'm not saying stop complaining. You can complain all you want. But you're going to keep getting the same response for a reason, so you're really just frustrating yourself and everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
We KNOW writing is hard, that's why we're sad in the first place!

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The frustrating thing for me is that there are better answers than "write it yourself", like "Why not try your luck with communities or authors who take prompts?" or "Have you thought about commissioning fic?"

Or, you know, when you have nothing nice or useful to say, just say nothing.

Writing is hard? Sometime tell all those highly energetic fans who spew 300 word fics all over ffnet, because they don't seem to find it hard.

I feel you, OP. I wrote fic of something because I couldn't find it and it wasn't nearly as much fun to write as it would have been to just stumble upon it and read it. Writing's hard and there are lots of things (like sex and action scenes) that I just can't write well.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing is, when I say I want more of this or that kind of fic, I mean I want to read it, not to write it. Even if it is something that is within my writing capabilities.

Whenever I try to read my own fics I always end up looking for mistakes or things that could have been phrased in other ways, and generally not having any fun at all. Not to mention that I already know what's going to happen next, and sometimes even remember parts near-verbatim even if it's been years since I wrote the damn thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Honest question, when you say you want more of whatever kind of fic, what are you expecting to happen?

I do write the fics I want to read. It's just I would like there to be more than one fic which I wrote myself.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, this, exactly, let me show you my multiple small fandoms where literally the only canon compliant longfic that isn't a bunch of unconnected porn prompts masquerading as a single story or the most ridiculous Mary Sue Bangs The Protagonist is the ONE THAT I WROTE, I am not even kidding.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Plus, having more of the type of fic you're longing for available can also mean more opportunity to communicate with other people who write for the pairings/write the types of stories you love. I will happily write as much fic as I can for my favorite pairings that don't get as much love in a fandom, but anytime I can find somebody else who writes for and loves that pairing, too, it's nice :). I can gush about that pairing to somebody else who likes it, too :).

And having other fans writing about the types of pairings or types of stories one likes and want to see more of can allow for opportunities for those fans to bounce story ideas off each other, or offer to help beta each other's fics, or stuff like that, and voila, more potential fics to read as a result.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. Like, I enjoy writing and posting fics, but sometimes I just want to sit back and read them too.

not op

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
When I say, "I wish there was more of X-type of fic" or "I wish there was more plotty genfic of X small fandom" or "I wish there was more fic of this rarepair", I'm not looking for someone to produce those things based on the secret. I might be hoping for recs of things that already exist, to be completely honest, but I'm really not looking for someone to tell me to write it myself (because I write a lot of what I want to read and dammit, writing is hard, okay, it takes a lot of work) either.

If I say something like this, what I'm after is basically a "Yeah, you like something that's hard to find/has gotten harder to find, and it sucks to want something you can't have. I'm sorry to hear that." Sympathy, man, that's all I really want. (Possibly also a "Hey, that thing you like IS pretty neat, I like it too/I'm going to go look it up" would be nice)

But hey, it worked for Linda Tran anon.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, which is why I make a point on commenting on the stuff of writers who do the sort of stories I enjoy. I like to thibm I'm contributing to keeping them motivated. And one time one writer was so thankful she even wrote a ficlet for me.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
as a writer of things that I rarely see get written, let me tell you right now that people like you are what make my fucking day <3 I'm happy with basically any neutral-to-positive feedback, but comments are my favorite, so thank you for taking the time to let authors you like know that you appreciate their stuff <3 <3 <3

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, commenting is how you get more fic you like.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an excellent answer to the OP's lament. There are small fandoms I'd write plenty more fic for - if people could only be arsed to do more than push a kudos button if I'm lucky.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Commenting on a writer’s work is definitely the best way to keep an author motivated. Speaking as a writer, thanks for that anon.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. I do write fic but sometimes I want it written for me.

The only time I ever say "write it yourself" is when someone tries to explain to me how my AU fix its are OOC and I should have written so.ething else they like better.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I never liked this response because it's more fun to read a fic where you don't know what's going to happen next.

On the other hand, you can't get fic out of other people like turning on a faucet. They're going to write what they feel compelled to write, use their time how they please. That's why I just suffer in silence when there isn't enough of the fic I want to read.
