This argument has never made much sense to me because in most cases, the person pirating never intended to buy the product in the first place. It's either pirate it, or (if that's somehow not an option) move on and pirate something else instead. They wouldn't have bought it either way, so saying the creators lost any profits at all isn't actually true.

Where's the data suggesting that people pirating are only pirating stuff they'd never buy? And what the hell does that even mean? Obvious people who steal content and know how to steal content are going to be less inclined to pay money for things. Just because they fork over the money for one or two titles every once in a blue moon does NOT mean they wouldn't be buying more if pirating was not an option.

And people pirate stuff they WOULD have otherwise bought all the freaking time.

That doesn't make it okay. They're not entitled to stuff for free just because they don't feel like paying for it.

NAYRT

But if the only thing that is being harmed is the sacred and inviolate nature of property, I find it really hard to give a single shit about that.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but the thing that is being harmed is actually, you know, content creators and artists.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-11 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Let me rephrase that. If the only thing being harmed is Not Me, I find it hard to give a single shit about that.

So the point that I was making was kind of specific to the context of the thread?

The conversation started out with someone who was arguing that not all instances of piracy actually harm creators (because some people who pirate would not otherwise have bought the work). If you disagree with that argument, that's one thing - I'm not sure that I agree with it myself.

But the response to that argument was that piracy is still bad even if it doesn't harm the creators at all, and I definitely disagree with that idea.

Prove it.

I'm just boggled by the sheer entitlement inherent in all of this. "I don't want to pay for this thing, but I should be able to consume it anyway." No, you shouldn't. If you want it that much, you can pay for it like everyone else. No one is entitled to anything simply because they want it.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for ignoring there are many reasons for not paying, including that buying something can be impossible because geoblock, importation/exportation restrains or simply because it's out of print, among other reasons.

I see a bunch of people in this thread agreeing that it's fine to pirate stuff that you can't purchase legally, so nice strawman.
