102 Having just referred to Radek and the other scientists as 'the B-Team,' who would you RATHER have Daniel work with? I mean, I understand disliking Rodney (and in case you wondered, David says there's lots of snark, it's not like they're necessarily buddy-buddy. The buddy-buddy part is the actors, not their characters), but if you like Daniel, I could equally see complaints coming saying 'WHY DID DANIEL GET STUCK WITH THE B TEAM' so there's no pleasing everyone. The best way to go is with characterization, and with Rodney in Atlantis and Sam at the SGC or in Washington D.C., Rodney's the go-to guy. Plain and simple.

109 I've never found femmeslash hot--till I saw this image. Nice.

122 I'm okay with that. There's stuff to like and stuff not to like, but I don't like to have EVERYTHING I look to for entertainment have to have some sort of blindingly anvil-like social commentary, and Whedon likes to do that. That, and kill off female characters for effect. It gets old, that's all.

141 Screw 'Twilight Moms.' If this is what it takes to get my kids to read, I'd rather they play video games. The ends do NOT justify the means. NO.

The girls would probably learn healthier relationship dynamics from the video games, and to have stronger personalities.

And that's saying something.

Hah, yeah, very good point. I mean, I GET the 'reading is important' thing versus 'TV ROTS YOUR BRAIN' and the like, but the fundamental flaw is in assuming that all books are good.

Writing isn't binary, it's not automatically one or the other.

Re: 141

[identity profile] luccamajere.livejournal.com 2008-08-02 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS. It annoys me a bit when I see people thinking "ALL BOOKS ARE GOOD ALL TV IS BAD LOL" >_> But I haven't actually read Twilight, so I have no opinion on that. I grew up reading AND playing video games/watching TV a lot. Why have on or the other when you can have both? XP A healthy variety in activities is better than just one or the other, imo.

just as the assumption that all tv is bad. as a production major this really irks me. some television sucks, some is sheer brilliance. same with books, music, plays...any type of entertainment, really, but tv always gets put on the shit list.

My niece loves the books. She doesn't have much experience in dating, so it worries me that they'll make her think that stalky creepy relationships are the way to go. :/

I'd rather my kids play Guitar Hero. I dunno who said that secret before, but they obviously got him in the head. =P

Bahahaha. So much word.

Why does Daniel need to work with a scientist at all? If he's there to learn about the Ancients, he can just hook up to an Atlantis computer and read and read until he can read no more (though that would make for some pretty bad television).

An adventure with Teyla and Ronon would serve everyone's interests: Daniel would get to work with native Pegasus dwellers, Teyla and Ronon wouldn't be in the background, and maybe they could uncover some artifact/weapon/tech they didn't have before. Win-win.

Good point, although I think my response was based more in knowledge of spoilers than conjecture... sorry. The point was (in the secret, that is) more directed towards 'hey, writers, WHY this, not that?' but since I'm not a writer, I reacted to what I know about the ep, if that makes sense.

As cool as that would admittedly be, by the way? They'd never do it, they'd be afraid it would be too boring. Sigh.

141. I'd rather they played Metroid than read that.

Hell, even Leisure Suit Larry would be better, he doesn't take himself seriously.

As someone who couldn't care less about video games most of the time, and who is adamantly against children playing them to the extent that I see (sweet pants, sibs and step-sibs, since when did it become impossible to endure a fifteen-minute carride without some form of electronic entertainment?), I concur. At least they'd probably learn someone about decent storytelling, worldbuilding, and characterizaton through video games, not to mention they'd meet a few fictional characters that could still be termed as heroes.

YES, this. I second the bit about better stories and worlds available through videogames. (And some better female characters, provided you pick the right games.) And I'd also rather have my kid (if I had one) play Guitar Hero - I can testify from personal experience that it gives you a better appreciation for rock classics.
