141. I agree. At least something is encouraging some form of literacy. Not everyone can read and enjoy a book like... Monte Cristo or The Scarlet Letter or whever before the age of 20.

I think 141 is less about young girls not reading classics as much as it is people are becoming disgusted with some of the messages and portrayals of relationships that are inherent in the books. I know that I would be hesitent to have that book be the only book my daughter is reading.

In all honesty, I would rather encourage my daughter to read that book and further her reading from there through recommendations than to have her completely disregard reading, which is what many teenaged girls are doing. Media nowadays (especially movies) gives such an unrealistic portrayal of relationships as a whole anyway that reading one series of books isn't going to taint her for the rest of her life.

This right here. Reading dreck and exposing a daughter to the world of reading is better than no reading at all, IMNSHAO.

The annoying part is that it implies it's the ONLY book to ever get girls to read.

Harry Potter kinda got there first and it got EVERYONE back into reading. Not to mention all the books that was there when I was younger. Sweet Valley, Babysitter's Club, Chronicles of Narnia, just to name a few. The first two definitely weren't classics but girls read them. :\

It's the new Harry Potter. It's implying that most teenaged girls are reading it because the teenaged girls who were reading Harry Potter are now in their twenties and have to find something else to read. Same with Babysitter's Club. (I think I was big into Saddle Club when I was a kid.)

It'll be the same when this stupid Stephanie Meyer craze is over; Dooky Pooky by Joe Smith will be the next big thing and someone else will be having this exact same discussion when that time comes. XD

Yuck ... I'm in my twenties and I would not pick up a Twilight book if you paid me. From the excerpts I've read and what I've heard, it sounded awful. I did read Harry Potter though and while Rowling isn't Austen or Dumas, I think she's much better than Meyer, just for the fact that the themes of that book were better.

I just hated the wording of the secret. The whole "at least they're reading" excuse makes me sad. As some commenter said, "the harlequin romance books got girls reading but is that a good thing?"

Hopefully the whole Twilight thing goes away because the secrets are becoming redundant. However, with the new book released, I doubt it. :(

Oh no, I misworded my response (just got back from the OC fair, and very tired XD)--I meant that the people who were really into Harry Potter are moving on with their literary life, and the kids who didn't have Harry Potter are reaching the age that we were when it was big and Twilight is kind of taking Harry Potter's place... XD;

Ugh, after all these secrets about Twilight, I'm sick to death of it already. I mean, at least they are reading, because reading at least encourages productivity in new ways (since most teenaged girls are more focused on whether or not they're hooked to some guy at the hip, having sex, etc. etc.)... but seriously, I know of children's books that I would rather read. Then again, I hate vampire books and fantasy novels, so Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, etc. never appealed to me.

I am, however, slowly devouring my abridged copy of Monte Cristo, but only because I watched the anime first. LOL.

Ooh, that makes sense. My brain isn't exactly working either (it's late here and I should be in bed but am not).

It's good that kids are reading but I really don't like what Twilight promotes. A few people on my flist read it but it's not something I would want really young girls to get their hands on.

And I know what you mean ... I'm sick of it too. It seems like all of them say the same thing!

Never big on the fantasy but I did enjoy HP and LoTR though I was reluctant to get into the first and only did so because I didn't have anything else at the time. ;)

There is a Monte Cristo anime! It's called Gankutsuou (Wikipedia on it is here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankutsuou)). From what I hear, it's one of the most faithful out of all the re-tellings of the Monte Cristo story. Not to mention the fact that the animation is mind-bogglingly gorgeous. The DVDs are out in English, and the dub is quite good... it might be a little tricky to get your hands on them, since the company that distributed them went down south, but... maybe you'll be lucky. XD

Sadly, the same could be said about some Disney princesses/heroines.

Yeah, but parents can teach them that's not real. Kids usually get into Disney princesses at a really young age. And some of them are not so bad. Twilight is being read by 11/12/13 year olds (at the earliest because I know there are some people in their late teens/early twenties who read it) and the parents don't usually know what's in the books to tell them otherwise.

But that makes it sound like it's so either-or. There's so many good, accessible books out there for teenage girls. Dealing With Dragons springs to mind. Bruce Coville's The Unicorn Chronicles, as well. Well, any of his stuff, but that one would probably appeal more to girls. And his stuff starts from age five and goes up to...well, I'm 23, and still reading his stuff. There is so so so much out there for teenage girls to read, from romance to fantasy to goofy little "what it's like to be a teen" books that there is No Good Reason why this piece of dreck should be the one (and often only) that they read.

Forget the relationships, I'm just talking about the friggen writing. Because then they come away thinking that that kind of writing is good.

If we're talking about teenaged girls, it very much is a case of either-or. Girls don't really want to listen to their parents' suggestions at that age; they're much more keen on their peers. And who are their peers most likely going to be reading? Stephanie Meyer.

I know that I personally abhor fantasy, so the books that you've mentioned really wouldn't appeal to any teenaged girl like myself. XD

It doesn't have to be a case of that, though. That's what I'm saying. Why are their peers reading that? If the good teenage-girl books got pushed instead of the lame ones, then their peers would be reading those, and they'd be reading those, etc.

Fine, you hate fantasy (which doesn't explain why you'd be reading Twilight; vampires and sparkles and all). So there's BabySitters Club, Angus Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging, The Princess Diaries, that Pretties/Uglies series, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Chix with Stix, etc.
And that's just the stuff geared particularly at the girls. There's the entire section of Young Adult stuff in Barnes and Noble. For pity's sake, there's even manga, if we must go that far.

It is not a fricken case of either-or. It's a case of some crap bit of vampired-up, teenaged-down harlequinn romance without the pedegree suddenly being the next big thing pushed at girls by the media, which doesn't encourage them to read--it encourages them to stay stupid.

You're not getting in the teenager's mindset. They can break into all the other books you mentioned above once they actually start reading. The problem is that many kids don't read and have no interest in reading to begin with. They need a spark to get them into it, and Twilight is that spark.

I... haven't read Twilight, and I have no intention to, for the reasons stated above. I haven't read Harry Potter either, if it makes you feel better. Come to think of it, I haven't read any of those you mentioned--I grew up on James Harriot, Steven King, Louis Lamour (or whatever his name was), and now I'm quite happy with reading manga.

DEALING WITH DRAGONS! Someone remembers those books! I had to be coaxed into reading those as a kid (although I was a bookworm) because I went, WTF, female lead? I'm not reading a bunch of fantasy books about some girl. And they were great.

And Bruce Coville is FTW, obviously. Any geeky kid should LOVE the A.I. gang series. The, "My Teacher is an Alien," series is classic... And I can practically recite the, "Space Brat," books from memory.

There's tons of better choices out there. Nobody needs to depend on sparkling vampires.
