Wow. And what about the hordes of books young girls liked to read LONG before Twilight existed? Julie of the Wolves trilogy, Anne of Green Gables, Little House on the Prairie, Tortall/Circle of Magic, Ella Enchanted, Heartland, Bobbsey Twins, Boxcar Children, Encyclopedia Brown, Mandie, Redwall, Nancy Drew or even some CLASSICS like A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. I must not have been reading anything at all when I was 10.

This. We must have been reading the backs of cereal packets, or something.

Mmmmmm I remember oatmeal packets used to have jokes on them.

I used to do that, actually.

If I was eating breakfast and I didn't have a book with me and somebody else had the comics.

Them cereal boxes made good readin'.

Oh Julie of the Wolves...I loved that book when I was younger. :)

Me too. I still have the whole trilogy on my shelf.

You get special points for mentioning Tamora Pierce's books. :P

I'm female, I must not be reading ANYTHING whatsoever, despite my reputation as the biggest bookworm amongst my friends.

Never mind that Twilight is the BIGGEST PILE OF FECAL MATTER I have ever read in my ENTIRE life.

I weep for the future of literature. :/

I know I'm a bookworm. I loved reading as a child and still love reading. But nothing short of a gun to my head will get me to read those books.

I'm not completely discouraged. I have a couple friends that are fantastic writers and hoping to get published some day. Hopefully people like them can breathe some creativity and skill back into literature.

Harlequin romances make girls wanna read. Does that qualify as a GOOD thing? I think not. Especially since it causes them to read OTHER Harlequin romances, like Twilight gets girls reading other books by Meyer. =/

Meh. Even as a young girl, Harlequin romances made me want to puke.

Even now they still make me wanna puke. xD

I actually read Harlequin romances - to snark at them and LOL at how bad they were. Good old times, yo. ^-^

omg, I forgot one, probably more. Cam Jansen. Her, Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, fantastic detective books.

I'm tempted to finish the summer with a nostalgia trip through some of these books. There are so many I haven't read in a long long time.

CAM! I loved her back when I was in elementary school. XD I always wanted a photographic memory.

Have you ever read any of the Sammy Keyes mysteries? They're what I'd want my daughter to read someday. The child detective genre liiiiiiives~
