Well, I wasn't going to say anything about this secret, because I felt like everything had already been said. But looking back at what the OP wrote, I have to say, I'm really offended by the whole thing. Because of course, only an FFX "fanbrat" would have a problem with X-2, right?

Honestly, I really don't give a flying damn about the gameplay in RPGs. Yes, it has to be accessible and not just a huge pain in the ass, but when I'm playing an RPG, I'm playing for STORY AND CHARACTERS. This is fact. Also fact? I adored Yuna and Rikku in FFX. ADORED them. "Yuna" and "Rikku" in FFX-2 are not the same girls. They are not the Yuna and Rikku I expected and was hoping to see when I bought the game and played it. These were just vapid girls who vaguely resembled their namesakes.

I don't care that the plot was "lighthearted". Whatever, I don't judge things based on how "deep" they are. That being said, I feel that the plot of X-2 is pure fanservice. My beloved Yuna and Rikku are nowhere to be found, replaced instead by these silly girls who chant asinine little chants and wear skimpy-as-hell clothing (that Yuna, especially, would not be caught dead in, just saying). Everything that happens in X-2 completely cheapens the events of X. FFX has one of the most (if not THE MOST) compelling endings of the series. X-2 acts like it never happened.

One of the reasons I loved FFX was because it was so somber. And OMG, the music in FFX is among my favorite music ANYWHERE. There are no traces of the hauntingly beautiful compositions of X anywhere in X-2's soundtrack. It's all poppy and shallow, much like the game's plot itself. Spira was a world of great suffering, and while it's GOOD that they were able to overcome that, it would have been NICE to see a little bit more homage paid to everything and everyone that was lost.

I am glad that Tidus and Yuna got a happy ending, I am. But I think they should have gone about it in a different way. X-2 just felt like such a rip-off to me. There was no hint of what made FFX so beautiful and heartfelt anywhere in X-2 at all.

I dunno, I personally think it's going a little far to say there was NOTHING of FFX in the sequel. The tone, plot, and characterization were all a fairly sudden left turn from FFX, yes, and I cheerfully smack large portions of the game with the Discontinuity stamp, but... I found a lot of the subplots to be quite moving or at least satisfying, and as for the characterization... One of my standout memories from the game was, when the Gagazet plot built up to that confrontation on the mountain, watching Yuna and suddenly feeling at peace with her characterization. She had never quite rung right to me either, but in that scene I was finally satisfied that under the guns and the hotpants, that was still my Yuna. Admittedly, I have more trouble with Rikku...

I thought at least some of the seeming irreverence in X-2 was intentional. The Zanarkand subplot especially - when you go there to Zanarkand, this place full of close and painful memories for Yuna, and it's covered with tourists and there's a game show and nobody gives a damn, I thought the purpose of that was to make you angry along with Yuna. Worked on me, at least.

I agree that X-2 cheapens X's ending (which is a bit awkward for me, because at the same time I really like it) but I don't know if you can really say X-2 acts like it didn't happen?

I definitely agree that the game had issues aplenty, and could have been much truer to its forebear. I just also think it deserves a little more credit than it gets.

I realize that other people are going to have differing opinions than me, and none of what I said in my previous comment was meant to be taken as TRUTH/FACT. It was my personal opinion of why I didn't like the game. It just never felt right to me, it didn't strike the same chord within me that FFX did (and FFX stayed with me for dayyyyyys after I beat it, the ending was that emotional for me). So I understand where you're coming from, and I totally respect your opinions.

For me, personally though, I didn't find enough of it's forebear to make it satisfying for me. When I picked up the game, I wanted to find things that I loved about FFX within it, and I just didn't. Other people disagree, I get that. But I have a hard time giving the game more credit from a purely personal standpoint, because it did not live up to the expectations I had for it. And I am fully justified in saying that. I guess I really just didn't appreciate the OP lumping everyone who disliked X-2 into the "fanbrat" category, because it's simply not true. Some of us have very valid reasons for not liking it. Some of us were completely content with FFX the way it was. I was hoping that since they made a sequel, it would add to the story. Instead, it just felt extraneous. It didn't make FFX any better or worse -- FFX is completely, 100% fine without it. None of it was necessary. And that's why I feel the way that I do. :D

I understand what you mean about there being little of the old Spira, but what else can one expect in a sequal? The big bad Sin is gone and the people no longer fear impending doom. Considering FFX-2's premise, FFX's music would be hard to fit in, for one. In two years (was it two years? I can't remember, been forever since I played it) these people rebuilt and rejoiced in their newfound freedom. It's hard to expect anything hauntingly beautiful when the cause of such emotions are gone. Yuna being bubbly and happy was a slap in the face, but considering the change of environment and no more martyr-summoner duties looming over her head, I thought it was fine that she kind of let loose, just like how the rest of Spira enjoyed themselves. I do criticize how the game suddenly thrusts you in this world and expects you to believe that everyone is happy and dancing around rather than bridge the gap between the old and new Spira, but that's what happened. They've moved on, they've changed. Even if they chose to focus on events right after FFX's ending, as a transitional phase, it would have been a more mellow version of the current X-2 plot and most likely harder to fit. I refrain comment on whether or not that could have been better...

I agree that I would've loved to see more of that quiet and somber Spira, but the moment Sin died and everyone was free, I knew a sequal could not and would not emulate such a world again. To that end, I do think that FFX is perfectly fine without FFX-2 because it makes little effort to continue although I felt it was because there wasn't much to continue. I personally consider X-2 to be a sort of happy spin-off that shows a happier and diverse Spira.
