As someone who works in a bookstore (and has to open tomorrow and deal with the Breaking Dawn releases, ugggh), I can safely say that plenty of other books have gotten young girls to read. In fact, in the three years I've worked selling books, I've noticed a lot more young girls coming in and buying books on their own than young boys. I disagree with a lot of what young girls are buying -- The Clique, The It Girl, Pretty Little Liars, etc. -- but I'm still glad to see them reading nonetheless. That includes Twilight, and I don't care about the "bawww but they only read stuff similar to Twilight too!" That's a yes-and-no sort of thing -- some do, some don't.

Still, the fact that girls have recreational reading is a good thing, even if it is bad books about sparkly vampires. Don't a lot of people go through a vampire phase anyway? They'll probably branch out and find new books to read in the future. Twilight will die down soon and girls will find something new to obsess over.

For the record, I like Twilight, but I love to laugh at how bad it is too. I'm in the middle of Breaking Dawn right now and lol'd so much at Edward eating pillows.

EDIT: Also, I've noticed people making the comment that it rationalizes Edward and Bella's relationship to be normal and romantic. Yes, I agree that they have a very unhealthy relationship. But think of it in terms of fanfic -- don't people in fandom like reading about equally messed-up things in fanfic? Nobody goes for that sort of stuff in real-life because it's just fantasy or a kink, so why should a girl reading about Twilight be any different? If my hypothetical daughter were reading Twilight, I would at least make sure she understood that having a relationship like Edward and Bella's wasn't healthy and that it's just fiction.

But that's exactly the problem, most parents don't, and girls actually do think that it's a perfect romantic relationship.

This is perhaps the best and sanest response to this secret ever! Besides, someone who I ride with on the bus everyday reads Twilight. I mean, sheesh! Am I gonna harass her just because she's reading it?!
