It is almost like they are treated like REAL people trying to navigate a new and complicated relationship. Sorry, do you think LGBT people should only be represented as angel soulmates with no conflict?

There are a lot of different ways that you can portray realistic relationships with conflict and complications. This is not a useful dichotomy you're portraying here, where the ONLY available options are either complete idiots who never talk to each other or try to resolve their issues, or perfect angel soulmates. It's just not the case that you have to choose between those two things.

NAYRT

Yeah, characters who never communicate are a staple drama trope, nothing to do with LGBTness.

You can dislike that trope even if the characters are gay, while still being glad the gay part is canon.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh? I don't think that's what OP meant.

You can be glad LGBT couple is on screen, and also think that the characters regardless of sexuality are terrible for each other and shouldn't be together.

Why did you jump to "they're LGBT so they must be angelic"?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a common response to ANY problems in fictional LGBT relationships.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it a response OP is making? I don't see it in the secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Why are you acting like fans never take issue with badly written het couples?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really watch Shadowhunters a ton but... isn't it an incredibly soapy show, relationship-wise? So this seems pretty appropriate based on the genre?

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, considering the other big relationship was two people who briefly thought they were siblings, their relationship is normal.

I'm the odd one out in "fandom" (well, I'm not really in it, cause I realize the books are trash... I buy them used and read them for fun and entertainment.) cause I hate all the TMI couples. And characters. Except those two, BUT also not as a couple. I don't ship them at all and everyone around me does.
When it was announced that there would be a Magnus centered trilogy, I thought it could be interesting, but now that it's a Malec trilogy, I won't touch it with a ten foot pole.

(The Infernal Devices and The Dark Artifices are both superior, but we'll only ever get mostly TMI stuff)

This kind of thing is why I was never able to get into Bubbiline. Oh, two chicks together! But also they're both awful to each other and in general! Yayyy
(I get that this doesn't quite match with the scenario you're describing but yeah ;p )

ahaha, well said :)

I'm kind of glad I'm not watching it just for them (which I was considering doing along the way) because "drama and conflict caused by miscommunication/lack of communication" is one of my most hated relationship tropes.

(Anonymous) 2018-06-17 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching it for them (and IZZY) despite my utter distaste for Clary and Jace, but finally it got to be too much.

The best thing you can say about them is that they aren't dead.

I scrolled past this without really looking and had assumed it was something to do with Supernatural.
