I think he had the potential to really nail what an elf was but the movies failed. I thought some of his costumes were silly, and the eyebrows bothered me (but only when he's an elf - I think he looks fine as is in his modern stuff).

Mostly, though, I just can't get past how they butchered his character. I love book Thranduil so much and there was so much interesting stuff you could do with him. But they did none of that, and even what they chose to do was wildly inconsistent depending on who he was talking to and what kind of character they needed him to be to prop up someone else.
