I had the same thing happen with a writing meme. Turns out most people meant "I never talk about writing except brief updates on my word count."

I think I pinpointed the issue, though: people aren't really looking for friends to discuss fandom/writing with or to read one another's fanfic/original writing or anything else. They just figure, we have one vague interest in common, let's be friends. LJ and DW are very real-life centric nowadays, and I think that's one of the consequences. People really don't want to tl;dr about their interests or post fic, they want to tl;dr about what they did that day, with the occasional nod to an interest they know a lot of people share.
