Possession was outlawed only a couple of years back in Japan. Sucks, but it wouldn't surprise me if other popular mangaka have also owned some at one point. Kinda suspect that there's at least a couple who have worked at Shounen Jump because there's also the Toriko mangaka got arrested for violating child prostitution laws in 2002 when he paid a 16 year old for sex.

For me at least being convicted of possessing child porn or molesting a child is something I just can't handwave when it comes to creators/celebrities and will poison my love of said thing entirely.

Not that I'm saying it has to for you, work through it in whatever way that's appropriate for you, it's just one of my hard-line things I can't get past. But I do understand your frustration OP.

This is the main reason why I've never been able to start this series. My partner loves it and rewatched it a while ago, and I made a comment about how I wouldn't be able to get into it because of what the creator did. My partner stopped me and said "Don't. I don't want to know. I grew up with this. Don't tell me. Don't ruin this." :(

I understand your frustration, OP. I'm sorry that something you love so much was tainted like that. It sucks.

I always find secrets like this interesting, because as an art history major, I almost take it as a given that a lot of amazing artists are terrible people.

No actually, the truth is, I assume most people are terrible and worse, 99% of them don't even make great art.

Don't get me wrong, I want justice for anyone that was preyed on by these assholes. But it doesn't stop me from getting something out of the work. If nothing else, my coursework taught me that people are damned complicated, and there's not some sort of weird contagation that will be passed on to me because I was able to take away something good from an amazing piece created by a flawed as fuck asshole.

I find it hard to hold Watsuki exclusively responsible when Japan's laws on possession were only changed in 2014. I also find it hard to decide something has literally no elements of sympathy to it when we don't know anything but that simple conviction.

You might get charged with possession because viewing or owning those images was a coping mechanism for something bad that happened to you. It doesn't make viewing or possession legal, and it doesn't make it okay to have viewed or possessed, but it does make you (the struggling and flawed human being who's trying to be get by) more sympathetic.

Or maybe it just makes you someone who grew up in a society that didn't inherently teach you these things weren't okay.

I guess this is my way of saying that knowledge of a criminal conviction doesn't always strictly affect my view of a person or their work. There are a lot of factors that go into something being a good person or a bad person, I don't think "having a criminal conviction" is a clear indicator of one side or another (ask the Americans who've been charged with possession of the drug recently legalized in Canada).

What bothers me is what he did. It doesn't matter that it was legal. It bothers me morally.

Yeah, I feel the same way. The Kenshin manga and anime were incredibly important to me for years, but it's hard for me to get past this. I've been struggling with it since I heard the news, and I still don't know how I feel about it.
